Think of what 20 years of faster-than-Moore's-law progress is going to do to 3D printing. In about that time (maybe 10 years, maybe 30, who knows exactly), I expect that it will be practical for anyone not dirt poor to simply print a 3D gun, and there isn't much gun manufacturers, the government, or activists can do about it. It's already on the edge of possibility, although there's no way it's currently even remotely competitive with just getting a gun manufactured by others even if they're completely illegal where you live.
