The colonies actually got a lot of help from the french, spanish and dutch, something that's usually not mentioned in US history classes.Madican wrote:In my view, it's not just a celebration of the day we gained independence from England, but also a reminder that as a colony we defeated what was then the strongest empire in the world.

From my experience, France is almost always mentioned as helping, but their role is usually underplayed because WE WON THE WAR OURSELVES.
It'd be like saying Robin beat the Joker. We can't let that happen. Has to be the Bats that does it. Robin helped a little. When he wasn't busy eating cheese.
But it's funny that we don't really have much of a reason to hate the French (given our history), yet some people actually vehemently hate them. Might be because of our perception of WWI and WWII, but frankly, France could have taken Germany themselves by the time the Americans entered the war since Germany wore themselves the fuck out before we came. Basically the only thing we contributed (besides a high death rate) to the First World War was pressuring Germany to make a snap decision in fear of us EVENTUALLY backing up England and France.

We did, yes, but the fact still stands that many of the decisive battles were strategized and led by American generals. The history doesn't gloss over the contributions of other countries, but we still had superior movements compared to the British.Lambeth wrote:The colonies actually got a lot of help from the french, spanish and dutch, something that's usually not mentioned in US history classes.Madican wrote:In my view, it's not just a celebration of the day we gained independence from England, but also a reminder that as a colony we defeated what was then the strongest empire in the world.
Also France got a bad rap with early Americans because after they helped us out they kind of went completely fucking insane in their own revolution.
Stuff goes here later.

Yes, but that didn't start our habit of characterizing them as cheese eating surrender monkeys.
