Okay, to sum it up: It's bad.

It's not that. Congress is refusing to announce a budget because Reps and Dems are arguing over how to spend our cheddar. If they don't figure something out TODAY, there will be a partial government shutdown. Best case scenario, government workers get their pay docked and some late paychecks. Worst case, tens of thousands of people get laid off from some rather important posts.

They've been talking about cutting unnecessary government workers until it's over.

Why are there unnecessary government workers in the first place?

Redundancy does not build efficiency, but it does build accuracy.

Well, it's all moot. Apparently they agreed on a budget in the eleventh hour. CRISIS AVERTED. Now we just need to fix everything else.

Well those are probably things like museums and stuff like that. Not the most important thing, but still nice to have around.

For those who care, Icelanders voted no on Icesave so this is going to the courts.

Hopefully we'll win this case.

I think you already explained this in the minties thread, and I sort of agreed with you there, but it appeared in the papers today and I can't be bothered to find those posts.

Doesn't the thing basically bowl down to this: Icelandic banks owed Dutch and British people in some way, the Dutch and British governments agreed to give that cheddar from their own reserves to their citizens, so that they wouldn't have to wait for all eternity or something, but the Icelandic banks had to pay the cheddar back to the governments with interest. But now for some reason the Icelandic people have to pay for it?

Yeah, that's right.

The banks somehow shifted the requirement to pay onto the people rather than pay it for themselves. We got a vote on saturday for it and around 60% voted no against Icesave. This means that this will go for court and I'm hoping that we'll have people who can reason with the courts.

We shouldn't really pay for the mistakes for a few individuals, such as Gordon Brown. Hopefully, we'll win this and still come into some agreement.

Also, when I posted it in minties thread, it wasn't yet voted regarding Icesave so I just posted it here to let people know of the outcome.

Is it because the banks went bankrupt and can't pay the debt back any more? Or does the government simply want to save the banks from bankruptcy with tax payer cheddar?
