I guess that's part of why so much of it felt lost on me. I never saw the old series, so I guess I just didn't get a lot of the references. The thing about how the Eye of Harmony works rang a few bells, though, and I'm glad we finally got to see the swimming pool. I've been looking forward to that since season 5.

I was a bit disappointed in the swimming pool since we didn't ACTUALLY get to see it, really. A 2D bluescreen image hardly counts. The library was way cool.

Agreed. Like I said, I'm glad we got to see the swimming pool, but it was still just a brief background cameo. Also, I spotted a bunch of plot holes throughout the episode. I didn't write them down, so I don't recall exactly what all of them were, but for one thing, why is it that they're able to walk normally despite the TARDIS being on its side? I know the Doctor says that there's some gravity thingy allowing them to walk properly, but if that's the case, then why did he have to use a grappling hook to get out of the TARDIS in The Eleventh Hour? And for another thing, why didn't that guy who thought he was an android ever connect the dots? He shows emotion throughout the entire episode, so shouldn't he have figured out that he wasn't an android? You mean to say that he never got a scratch or a bruise? He never felt any pain that would tip him off? Hell, he gets stabbed through the fucking shoulder(which, I might add, DOESN'T EVEN BLEED), and he needs someone to tell him that he's made of meat? Whatever made him lose his memory must've dealt some serious brain damage, because this guy is dense.

This episode had a few neat characters, some decent character development, an interesting idea behind the monster of the week, tons of fanservice(for old series fans, at least), and some really cool visuals, but man, did it have problems.

You could argue that the reason gravity worked now and not in The Eleventh Hour was because the entire TARDIS was apparently burning up and internally exploding in The Eleventh Hour, complete with systems failure and all that stuff. In this episode it was just sort of slowly melting down while 98% intact.

I didn't get why future burned Clara and future burned brothers were monsters and not just... burned corpses.

That's another question I had. Granted, it gives us some creepy monster designs, but it is still kinda confusing. What I'd really like to know is why these time zombies (I think they're called "whisper men" or something) have the ability to make the camera shake uncontrollably. I get that they were trying to do something like they did in the last episode where they were making it so that we didn't get a clear view of what we were up against, but after a certain point, that technique stops being effective and just gets annoying.

Also, if the Doctor has books in his library that reveal his name, then why haven't any of his previous companions found his name? Did NONE of the old companions ever find the library?

(by the way, I like that we got a few sound clips from old episodes. I especially like the part where we heard Christopher Eccleston say that the assembled hordes of Genghis Khan couldn't get through the TARDIS' doors. Nice throwback; it shows that Moffat actually remembers that there were seasons before he was put in charge.)

I really hope they start giving us some stuff to speculate over soon regarding the Doctor's name. I believe Moffat said that he was indeed revealing the Doctor's name, so they had better give us something to think about so that it doesn't just come out of nowhere.

My favorite audio clip from the past was the 3rd Doctor one.

Also the thing is with the TARDIS that it is infinite, and only a few companions have ever gone a few rooms past the control room. And then when/if you find the library, you also have to find the one book in the whole mess of things that has his name.

You mean the big, obvious book on the pedestal? Besides, I'm pretty sure "infinite" is a bit of an exaggeration. It might just refer to the TARDIS' ability to make new rooms and hallways and such.

By the way, did anyone else start whistling the Lost Woods theme during the part where they keep trying to leave that one room? You know which one I'm talking about.

The TARDIS isn't infinite, a picture from the BBC showed that it was about 10 megameters in diameter on the inside, which is about 10,000 kilometers.

But yeah Clara finding his name so easily was pretty stupid.

Moffat didn't write this episode, which is why it was mostly good.

Yeah, I know he didn't write this one, but since he's the one in charge, he always has some say in what goes on in an episode. I think it's a good sign that he's at least willing to let this fly.

I was rewatching some episodes from earlier seasons, and it got me thinking about David Tennant's return for the 50th anniversary special. I don't think it's actually gonna be the 10th Doctor himself. If it were 10, that would be a major plot hole, since, in The Next Doctor, he didn't know what his next form would look like. I'm thinking we might get another portal to Pete's world or something and the Doctor/Donna clone is gonna come back. But then again, Moffat probably won't care about the continuity here and just bring in 10 himself because OMGWTF FANSERVICE!!

I gotta say, it's actually kind of refreshing seeing a good sci-fi show that's getting screwed over by its own writers instead of by executive interference.

Image
Threatened by the possibility of executive interference; as a result, the content that was meant to spread out over season 4 was shortened down dramatically and a bunch of stuff meant for season 5 was crammed into season 4. It was allowed to have 5 seasons after all, but most of season 5 was met with very poor reception.

Image
Cancelled after four seasons, leaving fans with the biggest end of series cliffhanger since Twin Peaks. SciFi allowed Jim Henson Studios to make a miniseries to end it off, so the writers had to cram all the content they had planned for an entire fifth season into a couple hours. This caused some obvious problems.

Image
Cancelled after HALF A GODDAMN SEASON. Fuck you, Fox. :shakefist:

They can explain away the continuity errors with TIME SHENANIGANS or some form of memory loss (they'll probably use this).

Well, yeah. Just because what I said makes sense doesn't mean that it's what they're going to do. In fact, now that I've pointed out something they could do that would make perfect sense, it's pretty much guaranteed that Moffat is going to do exactly what you said.

Another fun episode today. Better pacing and less confusing than last week, exciting, the way it has to be.

So next week, the doctor takes Clara's babysitting kids with him because... they will tell their parents that Clara is a time traveler else.
Yeah, like they'd believe that.
