Every time you lose, you learn something. Which you can use for your next fortress. Ad infinitum. Until, finally, you have the perfect fortress. AND THEN YOU BECOME GOD.

Methinks that's enough water for now! IT'S FARMING TIME!

EXTREEEEME FARMING!

Image
It looks like they're setting up the farms, but they're actually clearing out stones.

Game tip:
Designate a one-tile Dump square (using 'i', I think). Use 'd' -> 'b' to bring up the dumping/forbidding/reclaiming menu. Designate everything in an area you want to clear out as to-be-dumped items.
The Dwarfs will pile ALL the items into the single square. In the best use of Dwaven Physics ever!
You have to use the d-b menu again and reclaim all the items in the square after though, or the Dwarfs will never touch them again.

Sure beats the colossal waste of time that is a stone stockpile!

Image
OH JESUS BUNNYTOTS CLEAN YOURSELF UP FIRST BEFORE HELPING OUT WHEN WATER IS INVOLVED EW GROSS!

AND IT'S ALL OVER THE WALLS NOW TOO!

Reminds me of a bug in an older version whereby blood and mud would not go away if it kept being spread! To the point that your fortress could quickly become coated entirely in red quite easily!

Image
So... cold...

Well actually it's not. It's still rather warm. I base that on the fact that the river hasn't frozen over!
Oh yeah, that's the other thing about winter. If you don't have an indoor water supply, or booze, then all your Dwarfs die of thirst!

But on the other hand, you get to carve stuff out of the ice! Whee!

Image
Woop, Dwarven traders! Carrying anvils!

I CAN BUILD HAMMERS NOW!

Oh, another game tip: you'll probably have to worry about the allowed weight the caravan can carry more than not having enough things to sell. Two things:
1: Cut gems and crafts have a good value:weight ratio.
2: Buy their wood. It's normally really cheap yet really expensive! Plus, it'll slow down how quickly you go through trees!

Image
That horse was killed 10 screenshots ago! About flipping time someone actually did it!

Image
FARMS FARMS FARMS FARMS FARMS!

That's a lotta purple squares, but unlike floor-building or stone-detailing, it's set up all at once, so it's a helluva lot quicker!

Image
This is what they want me to make.

Yeah, not gonna happen. The anvil was really all I needed!

Image
FARMS!

I pretty much assign everyone who isn't doing anything right now to farming.

At this point I really don't care much about keeping people restricted to what they do best. The only jobs that really matters for is mining and masonry/carpentry/crafting.

Image
Traders leave.

Apparently they're not entirely sure what way to go, because it looks like they just split up and none of them are actually bothering to take the road.

Smart.

Image
Woops are in order!

Once a Dwarf starts his construction, he's pretty much guaranteed to finish it and won't go insane!

Image
HE HAS FINISHED HIS... figurine?

...
It's only a model.

Image
Wait, the figurine is made of IRON?

See, that's really flipping weird, because:
1: He's a bonecrafter. And he got the MASSIVE experience boost in bone-crafing. Despite only being used for decoration (lol spikes. 99% of legendary constructions have spikes).
2: He somehow carved out a fucking bar of iron! Without heating it first!!

The Just Post is the nearby Dwarven civilisation that everyone came from. Apparently Mond must have an affection for his queen. D'aww!

Also, the thing is worth a massive 15500 monies! And just to make a comparison:

Image
IT'S WORTH MORE THAN THE ENTIRE REST OF THE FORTRESS AND EVERYONE IN IT!

GOD
daisies

Now I know how Games Workshop can get away with it's such high prices!

Image
More workshops! Which are, in order from top down:
Top row: Still (for making booze), Fishery, Carpenter's, Mason's, Kitchen, Leatherworker's
Bottom row: Jeweller's, Craftsdwarf's, Mechanic's, Mason's, Butcher's, Butcher's (you can never kill animals fast enough!), Metalsmith's

I still need a Furnaces (to actually be able to do anything with metal) and a Tanner's (to make leather).

I have weird priorities.

Image
Farm starts producing plants (well, mushrooms technically) already. Woop!

Although then again, it is already Winter...

Image
Whoops, Mond's already become God of Bone Carving by reaching the highest level possible!

Althoug hwhat's really impressive is that Strange Moods only give 20,000 exp in the ability! The extra 11,000 was just from all the bolts he's been making!

Image
Oh yeah, and whenever someone gets that high a level, they nearly always make Masterpieces. Thing is that everytime a Dwarf does, it pops an announcement.

IT! KEEPS! HAPPENING!

It gets particularly ridiculous when it's a Legendary +5 Engraver!

Image
I also start strip-mining in the hopes of finding precious metals or gems!

Digging /downwards/ is probably a better idea though, but it's also much harder to keep track of.

Image
If you haven't noticed, I'm begnning to take less and less screenshots relative to in-game time. Generally most of the action happens at the start, followed by major events later on. There's a lotta inactive time in between when you don't really have much to do!

Image
I order a COMPLETE AND TOTAL BEDROOM SMOOTHENING!

EVERYTHING! MUST! BE FLAT!

I think I may have a bit of an obsession...

Image
Furnaces are up. A wood furnace, which I will only ever use preceisely once, and a smelter, which turns coal into usable coke and makes metal bars for smithing with.

Basically, the only reason I need a wood furnace is because you can't actually turn coal into coke without one piece of fuel first. Otherwise, I have a MASSIVE abundance of coal!

And limonite, for that matter, which is smelted into Iron!

Image
...

It's only now, after half a year, that I realise I never actually assigned beds to the newest wave of migrants!

Image
It's also only now that I notice that Spoony is married to Bunnytots.

WHAT?!

Image
Hmm... yay, I guess?

Posession is the same was withdrawing from society, only that the Dwarf doesn't get the massive experience boost from it!
Although considering Ame is a glassmaker, that's not really a concern!

Also, I looked it up: I was wrong about Dwarfs levelling up strength/toughness/agility attributes with skills. Apparently they changed that to be an intrinsic value now.

Image
Image
MOOORE MIGRANTS!

I find it funny how people have always gone into a Strange Mood when new guys are around!

Image
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFHOLYCRAP 21 DWARFS!

MY FORTRESSES POPULARTION JUST DOUBLED IN ONE DAY!

Also, I have actually already named them... but I guess I overwrote the screenshot or something because I can't find it.
I can't really keep track of people who post in the thread anymore, so if you're not here just ask to be in!
List of names of the new guys (also, as you can guess, I ran out of names in the thread, so I just took them from the Top Posters list instead.
Sooo...
Darkin, Topazshot, Sloth, Yanimae, Torizo(ooooo), Squigzog, FalconerLombard, GameAngel, Merlin, TheOtherMC, Trygve, Starseed, Decker, Tabarnaco, Xabyrn, Kalekemo, Shoolis.

Also, I added four names not from the Forum too.
KuniHamuChi (Sailor Moon), Kaytee (a friend who reads this too), Urist (not a friend or anything, but... Urist. EVERY DF game must have a Urist!), and Zero (he was part of the Lets Play Dwarf Fortress succesion games on Team17 Forum, and was pretty much the greatest LPer of us. Also, he was a kickass miner).

Image
No surprise.

Image
What?!

What the hell do you want with leather when you're making a window?!

And the worst part is that it means I have to GO HUNT MORE HORSES!

Image
Also, I've been building up the outer fortress a little. I plan to make fortifications there to shoot out of, and a tower in the center.

It's a lot harder to build than to dig, by the way.

Also, I think this is a good time to show off how descriptive this game is:
Image
EVERY Dwarf has a description like that! The only part of it worth noting is the part just above the light green section. That tells you how tough/slow/weak/stamina-y/whatever the Dwarf is. For example, Mond here is really slow, but has massive endurance!

Also, he's got some kick-booty sideburns!

I have admired a fine door lately? Are you sure I didn't go insane and nobody noticed?

Then again, I'm apparently rich now, so I guess I'm just eccentric.

Also, I approve of my sideburns. And turning iron into figurines with my bare hands.

If it isn't much of a bother, could I be added into the game next time?
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.

Yes. Yes it is.

I mean, it wouldn't be, but I've already played through for the next three or four episodes, so you might not be in for a while.
