Simply put, people don't understand her character because they want her to be a new Zoey.
When she turned out to be nothing like her, people automatically assumed that she is just a blank black chick that's there for no reason.
L4D2 has a lot more subtle personalities as their characters develop as the campaigns go on.
You can't describe her in two words. Meanwhile, Zoey is a lot more shallow.

I don't see that much personality with Rochelle. She's never stood out that much compared with the the asshole, the boy in a mans body and well... coach is his own design. She's the kindest to the other survivors, I'd say. But apart from that I just view her as a more of a tag along token female character who gets her ankle broken while the hero saves the day.

She's not allowed to show emotion.
She's a woman in a tough business, showing emotion is weakness. Especially when you're with that asshole gambling prettyboy that'll treat you like shit if you don't stick your guns.
She hasn't got the opportunity to be herself. That's what makes her character so interesting to me.
And yet, when she's incapacitated, or on her own, she is so scared, and so vulnerable, and her personality shines right through.
She's a woman in a tough business, showing emotion is weakness. Especially when you're with that asshole gambling prettyboy that'll treat you like shit if you don't stick your guns.
