Aliens look like this:

Yeah, definately like that.

I'm pretty sure aliens are going to be somewhere out there but I highly doubt we have found them already. How long have we even been sending stuff out into space in search?

I object to this baseless conjuncture. Do you have evidence to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Aliens exist, Obama?

Wait.. Obama? What? Are you seriously trying to say that you do believe the entirely unsourced singular journal article is true, and that the president of the United States is probably the one making stuff up?!

That...

UGH!

DoNotDelete: Since just about any planet that can support life has to be Earth-like, it's safe to say aliens would look like something from Earth. Most likely they'd be at least semi-humanoid, if they were advanced enough to find us or be worth our attention.

I must find the aliens!

No, obama. You ARE the aliens!

And then obama was a president.

No. But I am saying:

Have they provided solid evidence yet? No.

Will the evidence they provide be solid enough? Probably not.

You're basing that entirely on life as we know it.

Life is based on organisms making use of energy exchange systems in their immediate environment.

The common energy exchange system in our environment is carbon trapping/carbon release.

There are other forms of energy exchange systems in the greater universe, so there is the possibility of organisms developing in wholly different environments. Depending on the physical requirements of that environment they may look a lot like we do, a little like we do, or not at all like we do.

An Earth-like planet which has the same conditions as our own would not necessarily come to the same evolutionary conclusions either.

If whatever disaster befell the dinosaurs did not occur, perhaps a reptillian organism, rather than a mammalian one, would have evolved to become the dominant species.

If the entire planet was covered in water for its entire history, limbs like legs and such would not evolve, leading to an entirely different body design.

So no, alien life would not have to be humanoid in any way shape or form, that's just your personal preconceptions talking.

As DnD said, this is hugely wrong.
But, if you want an example, compare how different plants are to animals. They're both Earth life, after all.

This one I'd agree on. It's not a 100% chance, but any aliens (assuming they evolved and developed technology, without outside influence) would most likely have grasping limbs.

Drake's formula in action, folks.

I never understood the whole "government is keeping aliens secret from us" conspiracy, though. It doesn't make sense. What motive would the government have for hiding the fact that there is extraterrestrial life out there from us? They're not GAINING anything by that, and in fact the secrecy would STIFLE research into the field, as it could only be done by their hand-picked scientists, rather than the entire scientific community.

Why the hell would it cause a panic? Does it cause a panic whenever we discover a new species? Did it cause a panic when we went to the moon?

And if you don't want the public interacting with the aliens, just keep them away. We prevent the public from interacting with prominent figures all the time, why would this be different?

As awesome as that movie was (fuck yeah giant mech battle), the government really screwed the pooch on that one. I try to be optimistic, and believe that in reality it would've been handled better.
