Yes. But everyone else at school would also have pokemon.

Or they would be banned, like pets.

Also, Rotom would cause havok, and hackers would turn Porygon into a monstrosity.

We would absolutely never ever see a legendary Pokemon. There are always multiple of them but they'd probably be just really really rare animals.
