Re: Dreaded parts in games.
Trying to get past the speeder bike section of Battletoads was hard enough, try doing it with 2 people. One of which sucks and steals lives from you.

Re: Dreaded parts in games.
Statuses were great in FF XIII. Not only were buffs and debuffs about equal in power (as in, Deprotect on an enemy is roughly equal to Brave on yourself... more or less), but there were almost no enemies immune to ALL the statuses... so at least one would work at any given time. They were also fairly easy to apply/remove.Kamak wrote:The thing I hate about status ailments is, for the most part, they're either a very minor nuisance (sometimes made into a problem if an opponent has a "Auto kill anyone with X status"), or they're the most annoying thing ever (Confusion in Cockfighting Society).
There's almost never really an effective balance, and if they're powerful, they'll invariably never hurt the opponent as much as they hurt you, so essentially, they're almost always useless to use unless the game forces you to use it as the weakness of a boss or something.
Also, status attacks did actual damage, even if they failed. Even Death. And they slow the stagger gauge. In fact, on many of the Cie'th missions, statuses are necessary in order to win in the time limit.
As for other games with statuses... yeah. They suck. Cockfighting Society is at least decent in that there are ways to take advantage of certain statuses, but confusion and Attract are the worst.

Re: Dreaded parts in games.
The endgame levels of DMC3 are really really bad.
I've been thinking about why, and I feel like the main reason is because of the enemies. DMC3 has this odd obsession with unstagerable enemies, and in the lead up to the last boss, they are particularly abundant. The most noticeable of these are are the Dammed Chessmen, although the Fallen are much worse as they combined it with the ability to fly through walls and moments of invincibility. Most of the "endgame enemies" sort of betray the lessons you've learned up to then, as you can't use enemy staggering to your advantage. Most of these enemies are also awkward to hit, which defeats the whole purpose of the style rankings because I can only really hit them once in a while and so I can't even get a D going. The best of the endgamers are probably the Abysses, because they can hurt you bad if you aren't careful, but you can still stager one and halt most of its attacks for a few moments.
There is also a lot of inane running around in recycled environments, and while the changes are cool, It still feels weird to be in mostly unchanged rooms (Mission 15 and 16 are the worst about this.)
Still, none of the final tower levels can compare at all to the 2 Hell levels. Those are pretty awful, while the others still have fun moments but are weighed down by tedious or unfun sections.

Re: Dreaded parts in games.
Yes. Cazadores > Deathclaws in terms of what I hate fighting with.
Stuff goes here later.

Sonic Unleashed was originally called Sonic World Adventure.
THERE'S YOUR SONIC ADVENTURE 3. IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS GOD OF WAR CLONE.
BETTER THEN DMC3 AND BAYONETTA COMBINED.
But really though those beat em up sections were awful.

Re: Dreaded parts in games.
The Werehog bits weren't bad, I think. Just kinda poorly placed. If they'd been their own game, I think the reception would have been a lot better. It cut up the flow a lot, but that was really it's only major flaw. The fights were pretty standard beat-em-up fair, and the platforming wasn't really ever frustrating to an insane amount. The music was hella great too, even if the battle theme got annoyingly repetitive as it never changed. I mean, all in all, they weren't as oh-my-god-so-horrible-terrible-why-why-whyyyyy as everyone wants to think they were.
At least for the Xbox/PS3 version. The Wii version is irredeemable in every possible way, to the point of being sufficiently worse than '06.

The Werehog bit are bad in the sense that the day levels are really good, and they should have just made a shorter game with a few more of those because they are actually really fun, as opposed to the night levels which are functional but not really as enjoyable. Also like half way through the game any enjoyment I could get out of the night levels dies and I just stopped playing after that actually.

Really? I have the Wii version, and my only real complaint about battling as Werehog was basically waggling the controller. It did seem a bit broken at times, though.Galaxy Man wrote:At least for the Xbox/PS3 version. The Wii version is irredeemable in every possible way, to the point of being sufficiently worse than '06.
I never liked the level balancing in Unleashed. There were more daytime than nighttime segments, but the daytime segments took maybe two minutes, while the nighttime segments took fifteen.

That's kinda what I thought until I played the xbox version.TerraChimaera wrote:Really? Basically, it boils down to the fact that the Wii version is basically a sin upon nature in every possible way, and the Werehog combat is possibly the worst bit, while in the Xbox version it's just kinda mediocre at worst but does manage to look really really cool.

The part of Dead Space where you have to sit on the asteroid defense system. Hate that thing.
