Re: Books and shit
Again, I haven't read the book, but
This doesn't really make sense. If anything, teens are more whiny these days. Back in the day, they had an actual reason to complain, other than BLUH BLUH noone likes me. From what I've gathered, are you sure that Holden was actually written to be identifiable? It sounds like he was written to actually be unidentifiable in a way, but still recognisable, so that people get confronted with their own whininess.Galaxy Man wrote: It is a simple fact, and as I recently thought of and pointed out, it is an OBJECTIVE fact, that this book has lost the main purpose the writer intended to give it. It can no longer commune with the average teen. Unless, of course, this teen happens to have all of Holden's traits. In this unfortunate case he would have no friends and everyone would hate him.

Yes.Syobon wrote:are you sure that Holden was actually written to be identifiable?
there are quotes like this riddled all over wikipedia. In June 2009, the BBC's Finlo Rohrer wrote that, 58 years since publication, the book is still regarded "as the defining work on what it is like to be a teenager. Holden is at various times disaffected, disgruntled, alienated, isolated, directionless, and sarcastic."
i mean this one in particular is especially hilarious because holden is ALWAYS these things, and then whines about being that way, but you get my point.
Re: Books and shit
But identifiability is not the same as accurate, or more likely in this case, satirical portrayal.

Re: Books and shit
It's satirical, however. If it was it would be treated as such. You really do have to read the book, because it's completely serious. If it was any sort of satire, it was done horribly and Salinger never spoke a word of it and took it to his grave,Syobon wrote:But identifiability is not the same as accurate, or more likely in this case, satirical portrayal.

Re: Books and shit
I just finished From Russia With Love, now I'm going to read Casino Royale. I know Casino Royale was the first James Bond Novel, but I'd gotten From Russia With Love on recommendation.
I love the way that Ian Fleming describes the settings. It makes me wish I was born earlier.

Is anyone else excited for the last book in the Inheritance Cycle?

Re: Books and shit
Finished Under the Dome by Stephen King the other day
On one hand it seems like he just keeps writing The Stand over and over (Something bad happens, society changes, something explodes)
On the other hand, I really liked the characterization in this one. None of the characters are really completely vile or completely good.

If by "excited" you mean "I can finally Wiki the plotline so I can be satisfied that it ended so horribly" then yes.Marcato wrote:Is anyone else excited for the last book in the Inheritance Cycle?
And no I'm not being pessimistic or bashing for no good reason. Paolini has no fucking clue how to a story that is not directly ripping off Star Wars. His characters are flatter than unleavened bread and Eragon himself is a psychopath with how he considers himself to be the law when it comes to passing judgement on people and factions as a teenager who bodaciously had power and swordsmanship dropped into his lap. And the dragons themselves are gigantic deus ex machinas and he admits this several times in the books like when he suddenly got his massive power upgrade in the span of a single night from tattooed dragons, and whenever Saphira says she doesn't know how she just did something completely random, like crystallize a grave.
Stuff goes here later.

See, that actually sounds like a pretty interesting characterMadican wrote:Eragon himself is a psychopath with how he considers himself to be the law when it comes to passing judgement on people and factions as a teenager who bodaciously had power and swordsmanship dropped into his lap.
Re: Books and shit
Well sure if Paolini wasn't having everyone on Eragon's side see his actions as heroic. I quite honestly think he's the most evil character in the story.Chinmaster wrote:See, that actually sounds like a pretty interesting characterMadican wrote:Eragon himself is a psychopath with how he considers himself to be the law when it comes to passing judgement on people and factions as a teenager who bodaciously had power and swordsmanship dropped into his lap.

Maybe it's a relative thing. Roran's a more interesting character anyway.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that Jaws was never your scene?Clyve wrote:I read the first Inheritance book and was pretty 'meh' about it, so I didn't bother to read any of the rest.
I never really got the 'Star Wars' vibe, but that is probably because I have never seen a Star Wars movie.![]()
Yes, you can shoot me now.
Re: Books and shit
I actually liked Murtagh over Roran. Mostly because Murtagh has the same stuff as Eragon, but he earned every last bit of it. And even though he comes from the same family as Eragon, his ideals are far more realistic. He doesn't want the downfall of the "evil" empire because that would bring ruin and calamity upon its subjects (everyone who is human). Instead he wants power to reform from within, and his character embodies an unbreakable spirit. Even magically bound as he is to serve Galbatorix, he is still Murtagh through and through. Compared to him, Eragon is a child who refuses to grow up.Lambeth wrote:Maybe it's a relative thing. Roran's a more interesting character anyway.
