The horns are supposed, to be Candy Corn, yes.
Recall that Sleuth kept his candy corn under his hat, where the horns would be if the trolls had hats.

That's basically Rose's typing quirk.
Most people don't realize, but John, Rose, Dave, and Jade all have typing quirks too.
John uses punctuation but doesn't capitalize.
Dave doesn't use punctuation or capitalize.
Jade doesn't capitalize or use periods, but she does use exclamation points and question marks.
Rose uses both punctuation and capitalizes.
