Cracked copy. Allows you to play without paying but sacrifices "official" servers because they check the username you use vs. the Minecraft.net database to see if you're logged in.

It's just a "username" box so you just type in any name, but if you keep using different usernames then your whitelist/op status on any servers would have to be re-added and cause a whole bunch of trouble. I suggest using your actual Minecraft account name if you have one or when you make a MC account to create it under your crackedversion name.

Yep, otherwise the option to check usernames against the online database wouldn't be an option and would just always be ON.
