Argh. got in, saw a chunk error, was advised to quit and log back in.
minecraft proceeded to crash every time I tried to start it afterwards.

Finally got the doorbell in my house working. I just had to extend the signal, but couldn't do so without inverting the signal from the button. Until it dawned upon me "Invert it twice!". I will understand redstone circuitry yet.
