Jigglypuff is still on the roster because it wrecks the ones who underestimate it.
Rollout and Rest to embarrass your friends at dying to a puffball.

After Brawl was released, I got to thinking that it would be cool if Characters would have "alts" since many main characters of Brawl have more than one iteration (like how Mario had FLUDD in Brawl). Alts would help take care of the issue of "clones clogging up the roster" because clones would be considered two sides of the same character/niche in the roster, only with slightly/radically different movesets. For example, you can combine Link and Toon Link to be Alts of eachother they take up one space on the roster, but they're two characters. Similarly, I'd like to see Zelda/Sheik get an alt in the form of Tetra/Zelda (potentially with a Phantom Smash (though that's a bit of an anachronism since Tetra =/= ST Zelda, but these are figurines anyways). For non-clone examples though, I always thought it was a missed moment of awesome to not include Wind Waker Ganondorf. To have a quite faster character wielding Katana (something none of the other fighters have done) would have been amazing to me.
I really think Alts would help clear up the issue with "having two Marios" (since pretty much everyone wants Paper Mario (with potential partners)), and still allow for a lot of characters...
Diddy Kong
Alt: Dixie Kong
Ike
Alt: Roy?
King Dedede
Alt: Marx or Nightmare (though neither is iconic)
Lucario
Alt: Mewtwo or Zoroark
Ness
Alt: Lucas
Pikmin & Olimar
Alt: Louie?
Pit
Alt: Medusa?
Pokemon Trainer (FR/LG)
Alt: Pokemon Trainer (HG/SS (Chikorita, Quilava (or Typhlosion), Feraligatr (or Croconaw) or B/W (Snivy, Pignite, Samurott))
R.O.B.
Alt: Brain Age head guy? (can't think of another popular Nintendo Robot for some reason)
Solid Snake
Alt: ... I don't really play MGS... so I think I'll be flamed if I say... Raiden?
Sonic the Hedgehog
Alt: Shadow (duh) or maybe Knuckles
Wario
Alt: Waluigi
Bowser
Alt: Bowser Jr.
Captain Falcon
Alt: Something meme-worthy
Donkey Kong
Alt: King K. Rool
Falco Lombardi
Alt: Wolf
Fox McCloud
Alt: Krystal
Ganondorf (OoT/TP)
Alt: Ganondorf (WW)
Ice Climbers
Alt: Pichu Brothers
Jigglypuff
Alt: Gengar (need a ghost on the roster.

)
Kirby
Alt: Metaknight
Link (OoT/TP)
Alt: Toon Link (WW/FS)
Mario
Alt: Paper Mario (possibly with exchangable partners)
Luigi
Alt: Paper Luigi (possibly with the Thunderhand from M&L and Pixls from SPM)
Marth
Alt: Soren
Mr. Game & Watch
Alt: Commander Video
Pikachu
Alt: Piplup (IDK)
Princess Peach
Alt: Princess Daisy
Princess Zelda (with Sheik)
Alt: Princess Zelda (with Tetra)
Samus Aran (with Zero Suit Samus)
Alt: Fusion Suit Samus
Yoshi
Alt: Birdo
In addition, Isaac or Matthew (or both, if the Alt idea happened... fat chance of that though...

) from Golden Sun really need an appearance.

God, I hope not. That would downgrade the accessibility. I hated stats in Soul Calibur as well, I always played at my friends' place and he'd always crush me with his fully customised character. (it was a pretty even fight otherwise) Fighting games are about improving your own skill, not spending hours tweaking stats, although that's personal taste of course. Still I really don't like the idea of tweaking stats in SSB. You could argue that they could make it simple and easy to set up, or not let it make much of a difference, but then they'd better leave it out all together. Furthermore, it would make it even harder to balance things.
@Kamak, the alt idea isn't that bad, but some off the alts you propose would have completely diffferent move sets. I mean, gengar and jigglypuff?

This is already something that sort of happens.
ex. Gannondorf is a tweaked Captain Falcon clone

Don't you be dissing TL. His playstyle is completely different from Link. He's one of my favourites as well.

I totally love Toon Link, but I think they could make his specials a little more different. Maybe fire/ice arrows, Hurricane Spin Attack, etc. I'm still iffy on Toon Zelda, and I guess that would be the only Zelda character that would be worth adding. I've heard ideas for Zelda/Tetra transformations, Zelda fighting completely in the Phantom from Spirit Tracks, and a few others. I think it would be tough to distinguish Toon Zelda's moveset from normal Zelda's, but I guess if they gave Sheik a decent moveset, it would be even easier for Tetra. I think the Zelda series is represented well, and Link will probably become his Skyward Sword iteration which is nice. I just don't want Tingle to become playable...
If Vaati gets in another game then I could see him standing a chance.
Skull Kid was a villain in one game, and I don't think one game warrants an inclusion into the Smash series.

Skull Kid has been in two games. And is speculated to be in Skyward Sword as an appearance of him can be seen, or so we are to believe as we cannot see any fine details.

It looks to be similar to the Skull Kid race at least.

thats probably in Lost Woods
though Majoras Mask is referenced in nearly every Zelda game after it, even WW
people think, since theres a human version of the Master Sword, that the villain is the Gilded Sword
also Pit was in one game, and hes a character
