That's what happens if a kid is forced to do something they despise or don't care for. They do it cause they have to and promptly forget everything once they don't need it anymore.
Good thing I like English.

Paraphrased from a segment I heard on the radio the other day:
But maybe celebrating the success of a year's worth of work is too much indulgence.
Maybe I'm wrong here, but I always thought Thanksgiving is supposed to celebrate a successful harvest. The whole "Pilgrims and Indians" thing is recognized as more, "the first Thanksgiving," i.e. "the first successful harvest the pilgrims had on the North American continent."University journalism teacher teaches a class on white privilege.
Thinks that Thanksgiving should be renamed "White Oppression Day."
Thinks that instead of celebrating oppession of culture and indulging in "the comforts of food and family," that Thanksgiving should ultimately be replaced with a day of fasting and contemplating your place in a global society.
But maybe celebrating the success of a year's worth of work is too much indulgence.

Those two years of Spanish disappeared as soon as I graduated.Syobon wrote:I wonder what they would think of kids and teens being forced to learn French, English and German here.

You people will never know the joy of being a native speaker of an insignificant language.

I can still read French pretty well, but I was never able to speak or write it exceptionally well (without sounding like a moron, anyway.) I didn't have the chance to start learning it until I was already fifteen, and the class was very tepid, list-based stuff. I did take it for four years, but the first half-year of each segment of it was spent reviewing the previous year's vocab, and none of the other students cared about it very much.
That said I can actually read several languages well enough to muddle through them; French, English and Spanish are all so similar when viewed together that I can generally read the other two without many or any problems, though sometimes my translation will be approximate or missing a word or two. German and Japanese I know an extremely hilariously little bit of speaking-wise, like really basic conversation stuff, and I'm okay with reading a lot of really basic German because of cognates and my best friend occasionally chattering at me in it because he's taking it in college right now.

Mine's even less significant than yours, and I know both. So I win double.
Okay, I'd be lost if I actually had to use Swedish in a real conversation.

Even if it's "dead", Latin's still a pretty significant language.
Anyway, back to dumb pics.

I wish I remembered something from my four years of Latin.

Syo and I pretty much speak the least significant language. Most times when people hear it they'll think it's a different language entirely.
