Like, really. It’s my favorite musical, but there was not one single even remotely overweight person in the whole movie.
This just in guys buying Rosetta Stone = CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!1!!11One of my pet peeves is how nonchalantly some people say they’ll learn a language. “Oh, I’m just going to learn Irish” is what I just saw that kinda set me off.
Well, first off, nooooooooo. You just can’t say that! Language learning is an entire process full of dedication and hardship and blurry eyes and mistakes and awkward pronunciations! You just can’t go up and act like it’s the easiest fucking thing in the world!
Secondly, language is an intrinsic part of culture. You can’t learn a language without getting a cultural perspective as well. High schools and universities have learning about the culture as well as the language explicitly linked for a reason! You’d be walking around half-blind if you did not have the cultural understanding to back up your lexical knowledge.
Thirdly, you have the entire issue of cultural appropriation, and what not. Just saying, I don’t see why an American girl should learn Irish, unless you have a reason to do so (e.g. Maggie and Ariana, WHO ARE ACTUALLY GETTING FUCKING DEGREES IN IT. THAT IS RELEVANT). LEARNING IT BECAUSE YOU THINK IT’S COOL IS NOT A VALID REASON. You need passion and drive, not whim and desire.
Lastly, just asdfghjkl. I’m using Irish for this, because that’s what I caught being objectified, but language isn’t a fashion accessory, just as culture isn’t. It’s something people have a true connection to, and everything, and just, just, just, nooooooo. just noooooo. noooooooooooooooooooooo. No.no.no.no.no.no.no.no.no.
No.
Same thing even goes to ‘mainstream’ languages like French or German! Don’t do it because you like the sound of them! Do them because you NEED/HAVE THE TRUE PASSION to learn, in a culturally inclusive way!
