You know, Dante could have looked exactly as he normally did. He really could have. He's still a bad character. There a deeper issues at play here.
It amazes me that none of the professionals who plays this game gets that. And really, Dante isn't even the biggest issue with the game, he just stands out because he's on the box art.

The knee-jerk reaction was that it'll be bad because Dante looks like shit.
But even though most people have moved past that and now it's about the actual gameplay, story, characters ect. they're still acting like it's because they changed his looks.

It boggles my mind the insane amount of fanbase Homestuck got compared to the other stuff. Where did this come from? What chord did it strike that attracted so many fans?

Word of mouth, really. I mean, for what it is, it's really neat. Same way PS was. But then there was act 5 which essentially introduced a slew of somewhat shitty to incredibly shitty characters and that made it more popular for some reason? And now you have people referring to their relationships as "quadrants" and spitting into buckets. (Kind of really gross. Not in a NSFW way but it's still fucking gross)
