With 18 current players I highly doubt it'll be a quick-and-easy for the Mafia.

Don't forget the advantage they have. They know everything. That's what made it so easy for me to coordinate the last game's victory. It's a little more scary without that knowledge, but I'm willing to call truce on this silly back-and-forth if you are.

Again, mafia kills seem to be basically whims, at least on the first night.

A possible whim for a mafiascum could be "well, who do i want out of the game right now?".
Sometimes external drama influences that decision. I haven't seen it happen.

Usually the first night results in the mafia killing one of these 3:

1. Someone that decided to post early with something that makes the mafia think they're in a power role (possibly like what Tales did last game)
2. Someone they want out of the game for whatever reason ("We don't like new member, new member must die")
3. Someone they like to throw off suspicions

Tales was totally random in the last game, we just needed someone to kill. In hindsight, it might have been smarter to kill someone who had been more active, but we won anyway so no regrets.

Originally when you guys killed tales, I thought maybe he was a mafia member that outed himself by asking for "the link" (since in some versions, if the mafia kills a member, they're seen as a villager, though sometimes they need a janitor to do that). Then when he was revealed to be a fool, I thought you had seen through him trying to make himself suspicious and killed him so the villagers wouldn't lynch him.
