Hal stood silent for a few moments. He had really never heard of a prodigy taking on someone else like this other than an elder/prodigy pair. He knew he wouldn't just let anyone follow him. Hal was rather picky when it came to people he would end up spending long amounts of time with, and being the Prodigy, he had the privilege to be choosy. At first impression his boy didn't have the qualities that Hal disliked; he was taciturn, and judging by the book he held, he was a scholarly type, and learning from the prodigy and seeing what he does would be his perogative. Despite this last inference, Hal decided to accept.

"I suppose it could be worked out. May I know your name?" Hal asked.

"Rick Flores." He said, bowing slightly... only to be met with an altogether more friendly gesture than he expected from a prodigy. He straightened up and took Hal's hand, shaking it firmly. /This is a great opportunity...../ He thought with excitement, although he managed to conceal it, merely giving Hal a smile. "I...witnessed everything. Want to know?" He asked.

Her fingers twitched and slowly closed into a fist. Unconscious, the unseen passenger was making her remember, making her relive that one day that escalated far above the others in "this really sucks". No matter how much she struggled, she could not break from the dream. Was it a dream? Was that the proper term for it?

Shaking, bruised, and scraped, the girl did not stop to breathe in the stale night air. She'd been running for what felt like forever. Her legs felt like lead and her heart thumped painfully in her chest. This wasn't the first time she'd had to run for her life, and she had a great amount of stamina for her age, a meager fourteen. It was the nature of the chase that hurt the most. It felt like someone had lodged a stone in her throat, but she pushed forward, pumping her legs and arms as fast as she could.

Her brother had sold her.
Sold her. She'd been resting in the small alleyway she typically called home when his friends had jumped out. She knew them all almost as well as she knew her brother. He had begun to make powerful connections. They all surrounded her, but he apparently hadn't warned them about her weak shadow magic, because she soon cloaked herself and disappeared. They managed to track her down until she was found again, her magic run dry. That was when she ran. Even though she managed to hide herself again after a while, they split up, and now one of them was hard on her heels. Judging by the sound of his panting, it was Mark. He had taught her how to play Blackjack.

She turned the corner. A dead end. She tried to swear, but no words could escape. She was simply panting too hard. Her pursuer put a hand out, grabbed her greasy ponytail, and yanked. She knew she should have had it cut. It hung limply down her back, an easy handle for anyone who wanted to catch her.

Fear and adrenaline spurred her on now. She pulled the knife from its secret sheathe under her clothes and jammed it in Mark's throat up to the hilt. He let out a gurgle, a scream kept down by the blade, and toppled to the ground. It was the first time she'd had to directly kill somebody. She regretted nothing, and sat down to pull her only weapon out. Only when she tried to stand did she realize she no longer had the strength to do so. Meekly, she crawled to the far end of the wall, curling up into a ball. She didn't know what they'd do with her. They probably intended to sell her to a kingdom where slavery was still legal.

It was then the walls began whispering to her, and she whispered back.
"What? What do you want?" She choked down a sob.
"I can help you."
"No. No. No, I don't know-- I don't know... Who are you?"
"A friend. I can give you the power to fight them. The power to be free. All you have to do is... let me in."
"I don't know what that means!" Her voice rose, and she raised her head. There was nobody around.
"Open yourself to me. It's not that hard. Be quick about it, for I hear them coming."
She swallowed, her throat painfully dry, and nodded. In that instant, she felt all her energy come flooding back in. There was more than she knew what to do with.

The rest of the group of would-be slavers stopped in their tracks when they saw her standing there, all alone, dirty knife in her hand. They talked among themselves. Had she finally given up?

She responded by raising her left hand. The shadows in the alleyway all rose as one, swirling around until they became solid. They realized what was happening, and scattered. The ball erupted, tendrils of shadow magic flying everywhere. It bound their hands and feet, bringing them to the ground. She felt nothing, as if she was watching it happen to someone else. Then the anger set in. They deserved to die. They all deserved to die. So she went around to each of them and cut their throats. Only then did she relax and attempt to sit down again, only to find her muscles had locked up.
"What are you doing?" She'd already come to think of the voice as a separate entity.
"You're mine now, child."
Slowly, her hand reached over with a mind of its own, laying the knife against her other arm. She fought it all the way, but it wasn't enough. It sliced through skin, drawing blood. The agony was terrible, but she could not scream. Her mouth was no longer her own. The blood seeped over her arm, solidifying, turning white. It felt like it burned away her flesh everywhere it touched. The thing, whatever it was, placed the blade below the white mark that had formed, and repeated the process. Eventually she stopped fighting, and just stood there, letting it mutilate her body in whatever way it wanted.

It took about an hour, and after that hour was up, she regained control. Yet all she could do was huddle in that alley, staring at the bodies that were practically laid at her feet.

The templar got one of his arms free and punched Marcus in the face, knocking him off the templar. He bolted for the door, but was stopped short by the elder.

"Ugh" Marcus got up on his own to feet. "You bastard, I'm going to kill you!" He took a shot at the templar and hit him square in the jaw.

"Marcus why did you do that!?" exclaimed the elder. The templar responded Marcus's attack with his own, nailing Marcus in the stomach with his fist. Fighting broke out between to two. It only ended when the templar charged electricity and sent towards Marcus, Marcus flew back and crashed through doorway, the guards looked at Marcus for only a few seconds to realize who he was.

"IT'S THE FIRE PRODIGY! GET HIM!" they both yelled. Marcus pulled up his hood, he needed to get out of the castle fast. He ran through the hallways trying to avoid the guards he alerted "Jesus Christ! I should have stayed in Magmasa, I wouldn't be in this situation if I did!". When Marcus looked behind himself he saw a large quantity of guards chasing after him, he eventually got out of the castle. He played the same trick as Miji did before and sent a spark into a small shack that was unoccupied, the shack was up in flames in an instant. When he looked again no guards were chasing him, he ducked into a nearby alley to rest.

Garrett picked himself up and walked over to Greylin, who was still sitting on the road with a shaken look on her face. He looked at her briefly and offered her his hand. She accepted and he hauled her to her feet. "I would ask you what that was all about," he started to say, "But I'll wait for you to tell me on your own."

He turned to look back at the road they had come from. "Well...I suppose there's no point in going to the capital now."

"Of course not," Greylin said. "What will we tell the Templar and Jane? 'We found evidence, but it was stolen'?"

Garrett scowled. "Still, we need to restock our supplies. Let's find the horses before they go too far, and get to the city before night falls."

The horses, as it turned out, had only gone around the bend of the road before they had settled down and began to graze on a patch of grass. Pips was with them, chasing a moth. Garrett and Grey got back on their mounts and continued to the capital.

------

Garrett looked around curiously as they entered the grand city gates. It was certainly a fine city, with tall buildings made of stone, and storefronts that displayed rows of colorful goods. Peddlers stood on the street corners, hawking their wares. Some were selling food, like roasted chestnuts and wrapped meat pies. All in all, it was a cheerful jumble of city living. It reminded Garrett of the inner city at Altamoore.

They dropped off their horses at a stable and headed into the city to look for a place to restock their rations. Garrett walked along, staring amiably into the various alleyways they passed, until--

"Hey, there's someone in the alleyway." Garrett paused and took a closer look. Greylin stood beside him to see for herself.

Marcus got to his feet when he saw the pair standing in the alleyway. "Did they find me?? I've got to get out of here!" He looked at them and tried to seem fierce. "Hey, let me go past you! I'm the Shadow Prodigy!!"

Garrett and Greylin stood there, silent. They exchanged a long look with each other before turning back to the person in the alley. Garrett snickered. "Are you really?"

"That's right!" Marcus exclaimed. "And I'm a vampire, like the rest of us Shadow users! So don't mess with me!"

"What an honor to see you in person, dear Prodigy," Garrett said, flourishing his dusty green cloak. "I am a very devoted follower." Then he sneered. "Perhaps you recognize us as fellow shadow mages?"

Marcus swallowed nervously. "Y-you are?" He glared. "Get out of my way!" He dashed forward, drawing his fist back for a punch.

Garrett sighed. A shadow detached itself from the wall and cloaked his hand, which then clenched into a fist. He sidestepped Marcus's punch and his own fist collided with the kid's forehead. He slumped to the ground, dazed.

Garrett looked back at Greylin. "What should we do with this guy?"

Greylin grinned. "Tie him up." Their guest was soon bound in a coil of ropes. Ow. His head was throbbing from the earlier blow to his skull. Garrett was playing with the kid's shadow. His shadow on the wall rose up and took on a demonic shape before pouncing and swallowing the smaller shadow.

"What are you doing...?" Marcus asked.

Garrett grinned. "Oh, this is what all vampires do in their spare time. It's socialization, see?" He hissed and bared his teeth, trying to refrain from laughing as the kid recoiled. Garrett finally turned to Greylin. "So, are we taking this lout with us?"

"Yeah, we are. Garrett, carry him."

"Why do I have to carry him??" Garrett whined. Nevertheless, he hoisted their hostage up and slung him over his shoulder. "So what's your name, anyway?"

The whole time, Grey had been snickering quietly to herself. This sad excuse for a human, a Prodigy? He'd chosen the wrong person to impersonate. As soon as Garrett hoisted him up over one shoulder, she burst out laughing. The fit didn't stop for another few minutes, and when she was done, she wiped a tear from her eye. "Thanks kid, you're just precious. I needed that." She laughed again, then sobered up. The "shadow Prodigy" glared at her.

"My name is Marcus," he growled, squirming in the ropes. "I'm--"
"Nevermind," Grey said. "I stopped caring." Distracted, she stared into the sky. She could hear footsteps. Frantic footsteps. They grew louder, and thinking quickly, she threw a shroud of shadow over the three of them. They disappeared from sight as the guardsmen stormed the alley.

"daisies, I think he got away!"
"Why the hell did he burn that shack up, anyway?" One complained.
"Who knows. Why did he burn that village? We'll never know what these goddamn Magmasans have going through their heads."
They exited through the other side. The woman uncovered them, and slowly turned to grin eerily at Marcus.

"Now I see. You're definitely coming with us, kid. Martin. Marcus. Whatever you said your name was."
"It wasn't me!" He insisted. This time Garrett spoke.
"We know." The Magmasan was silent for a second.
"You know? How?"
Grey crossed her arms, giving him a cold stare. "Altuanians torched the place, attempting to frame the Magmasans. We had evidence, but it... ah... escaped our grasp."
Marcus stopped struggling.
"So... you won't kill me, then?"
"Not unless you get on my nerves."
"Point taken."

A sense of dread followed her as they made their way outside the city. She kept Marcus cloaked the whole time, trying not to draw attention to the fact that they were carrying a fugitive Pyromancer. This was it. No more fooling around. She had to tell him. It was now or never. They were far enough away that they stopped by a stream, and Garrett dropped Marcus. The Prodigy landed with an "oof".
I don't suppose there's any chance you can make him deaf as well as blind?
I'm afraid not.
daisies.

She pulled Scion off her back, twirling it. She hit Marcus a solid hit on the back of the neck, and he let out a cry of panic as his vision faded. Then she began to weave the nearby shadows until they formed suitable earplugs. He was carrying on, so she gagged him as well. She stuck Scion's end in the ground, leaning on it, refusing to meet Garrett's eyes.

"So, it's about time I explained everything. Well, everything I know, anyway."
He was silent, waiting for her to continue. She sighed.
"A long time ago, I made... a deal. A very stupid deal. Power for... my body." She winced. "These markings branded into my skin... I'm not even entirely sure what they are. I think... they let it take control when my guard is down. When I'm angry, or upset, or anything, it can... get ahold of my mind. My body. I can usually fight it off, but, not always. It refuses to tell me much more. All I've gathered is that everyone else it's done this to eventually... goes crazy and starts killing everyone they know. I don't know if anyone has ever gotten rid of it. I don't know if doing so means I no longer have any of this power, or if it was mine to begin with, or... what. All it's said, really, is that our people would call it a... demon. It still talks to me, sometimes."
She stared up at the sky. "So, I guess if not for this, then you'd be Prodigy, huh?"

Mary shrugged. "Not up to me to decide. We're almost there though, so you'll find out."

The group passed out of the forest and into a massive meadow, with the treeline fading away like distant mountains. And at the end of the Iron Path stood a massive, walled city. The capitol of Kudzu, City of Beginnings, Genesis.

Miji looked at the capital, which was a grand place, but he had more important things on his mind.

"Do you know if there is any way I might be able to speed up this whole process? Sorry if I come across as impatient, but I really need to get this over with as fast as possible."

"Certainly," said Mary, hopping down off the Crushbear. "Yeah, I can help speed things up. Just like...this."

She placed a finger on Miji's tongue before he could react. Instantly his vision began to darken and the guards moved to catch him. Mary's face swam in his vision and vanished, with her words echoing in his mind as he succumbed to sleep. "I did say Kudzu's poisons were some of the best. See you in about an hour or so."

--------------

Miji felt a prick on the top of his arm and awoke.

He saw a group of three men arranged on large, but simple, chairs before him in a darkened room, the only light coming from a hole in the ceiling. His wrists were bound to a chair of his own, and his mouth was dry like cotton. Another prick to his arm and the haziness vanished instantly.

Mary withdrew the needle and handed it to a servant as she moved in front of Miji. "Rise and shine sleepyhead. Have a nice nap?"

Miji quickly got over the side effects of whatever they had injected him with, and immediately tried to get a hold of the situation. From what he could gather, he was in a dark room, with a few people sitting in chairs, and Mary was to his side. This must be the interrogation room, because the light was coming from a hole in the ceiling, meaning they were likely in some kind of dungeon. He was also bound to a chair.

"Why am I bound? Am I some kind of prisoner?" Miji asked. So this was what he got for all his trouble. Just great.

Garrett was silent for a bit. "A demon, huh..." He could recall legends of ancient otherworldly demons, creatures from mythology, beings from fables...he had never doubted that something like a demon really had existed at one point. However, it was hard to believe that they were still around during their present time. Stories never talked about demons from their age. They were always spoken of from the Age of Mythology. That was how a myth worked--some ancient god or demon played their role in the story, but once the story was done they ceased to exist in the real world. At least, that was how Garrett had always seen it.

He let out a long sigh and gazed skyward, watching a cloud drift lazily across the sky. "You know...some time ago, I would have been bitter about your Prodigy status. When I was a child, I coveted that special place. I believed that if I could become the Prodigy, I could solve all of my problems." His eyes had a faraway look. "But a couple of years ago, I realized what childish nonsense that belief was. Utter foolishness. A special title grants nothing to its' bearer--you still can't prevent the inevitable from happening." He looked at Greylin with a half-smile on his face. "The bearer grants themselves the privileges to that title. The title itself is nothing but a trophy."

He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. "And besides...after laying eyes on our dearest Elder, I'm frankly relieved that I missed the trophy."

The half-smile turned into a full grin. "As for your little 'problem'...I think a mere demon would find quite a challenge in deterring me. I'm very hard to kill." Garrett chuckled. "So, let's not concern ourselves over things that have yet to happen. Whatever will be, will be...but that doesn't mean we have to cower in a corner waiting for it."

"MMPH!" Marcus was making a racket, he couldn't see, he couldn't hear and he was tied up. He didn't know what was going on around him. He imagined that the two kidnappers left him to die. With this assumption, he took his chance and thrashed about to try and get up on his feet as best as he could, unfortunately while doing this he hit his head hard and passed out on the ground.

A chill traveled up her spine, still remembering that dream, still remembering the feeling of the markings being seeping out and being burned into her flesh. How did anyone ever forget something like that? Since then, normal everyday aches and scrapes had bothered her little. She was usually able to tough it out just by comparing the two occurances. A cut down to the bone on her arm? If she could stop the bleeding in time, it was nothing. Jane had taught her how to use the shadows as stitches in emergency cases, though it required a lot of concentration.

She grinned right back at him. "I don't doubt that you're hard to kill, though that might be because you run away. I suppose being fleet of foot is a fairly useful skill." She didn't suppose, she knew. "A thousand years experience killing people for pleasure might prove you're easier to kill than you think, though. But I'm not about to let that happen." She would cut her throat before she let it take complete control over her again.

Marcus began flailing wildly, and she looked back over at him. He managed to knock himself out, and she snorted. Waving one hand, the earplugs and gag dissipated, and she felt the power she'd used to blind him slowly flood back. As soon as he woke up, he'd be able to see again. She got to her feet, plodding over to him, and hoisted him over one shoulder again. She had to use two hands to keep him steady. She was more about speed than strength.

"And as for Jane, well..." She shrugged. "She doesn't much like me either. But I did save her life, probably, so she only says half the nasty things she thinks. You should hear her when she bitches about me to the Emperor." Grey chuckled to herself, going on to do her best impression of the Dark Elder. "'Why the hell did you let that little slut go? She deserved a slap to the face for that comment! She practically called you past your prime! I tell you, you can't let that bitch talk to you, even if she's our Prodigy! You have to get her to show some respect, to you and to me! I picked her up off the street, some lowly dark-skinned whore mercenary, and trained her, and fed her, and taught her how to talk properly!'" She paused for a second. "Really she just screamed at me for swearing every other word."

She slung Marcus across the back of her horse. "Now, shall we see what we can do about those goddamn shit-for-brains Altuanians?"

Eventually, a guard called for Hal and the elder. Hal and Adam walked out of the guest room, and Hal motioned for Rick to join him. "The queen won't mind if you come with us, she's rather easygoing about that sort of thing," he said.

Instead of the throne room, the guard took them to a meeting room, where officials used to meet to discuss war. It had not been used in a long time for its intended purpose, but recently, the maps were put back on the tables and on the walls, covering the teal-painted walls. On the end of the table sat the queen, not in her formal attire but in nice clothing nonetheless. Her jacket had the royal insignia on it, as well as the colors of Galevonia: light blue and teal, like the colors of Hal's ritual attire.

((Super sorry about the major fudging of things here, but I've been kind of on a writer's block lately and I really really do not know what to write about what I want the queen to say. maybe I will change it later, I don't know.))

Hal was sort of confused by what she would have him do. Just go back home and make sure you don't get in their way? It sounded better than prepare for war, but still, he didn't exactly see how this would help anything. Perhaps they were still investigating, and didn't want to start a needless war. Again, maybe it was just some rouge Daringlonians.

They bowed on their way out, and headed out of the castle, this time with no escort.

"....No action?" Rick asked at length, once they were beyond the castle gates. He brushed his hair away from his left eye, the emerald orbs looking slightly confused. "Isn't it obvious we have people attacking us?"
