Because it didn't sound serious. It's the Internet, you can't read intents through small posts on a forum. He also didn't ask because he dislikes upstanding members of society but because he wasn't sure if you were indeed serious.

I think there's just a lot of hesitantation, and misunderstanding going on over something that's typically a touchy subject in society. Like Marcato was just trying to confirm that it wasn't, in fact, a joke and not offend Tatzel in any way, but just the fact that being, or not being, a upstanding member of society is a touchy subject makes Tatzel hesitant to believe that Marcato was being sincere.

Should being a upstanding member of society be a touchy subject that almost required a confirmation? No, it shouldn't, but then again neither should being a homosexual.

Besides, there have been more than just a few times on this site where someone, often not from the forum, was being given shit over "upstanding member of society related" shenanigans.
