Re: The Current Events Thread
I don't think it's right to feel sad. He lived a full life as a hero to so many people, both in America and around the world.
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.

Yeah, and he was pretty secluded and left alone by the media and conspiracy nuts (unlike Buzz Aldrin). He never wanted a celebrity life and he never really had one outside of everyone knowing who he was.
Seems like a pretty good life.
However, the fact that Phyllis Diller died the other day...
I'm definitely going to miss her. She was a great comedienne.

Perhaps this is balanced out by the memory of buzz aldrin punching a guy who said they never went to the moon.Fluffdick wrote:I'm seriously sad right now. It's even sadder to know that he died with the thought that some people didn't think he went to the moon.

The one I feel the worst for is Michael Collins. He was in the Command Module and never stepped foot on the moon, so it's almost impossible to find somebody who knows who he is.Lambeth wrote:Perhaps this is balanced out by the memory of buzz aldrin punching a guy who said they never went to the moon.Fluffdick wrote:I'm seriously sad right now. I mean, Neil lived a pretty secluded life after it, Buzz was constantly in the limelight and was hounded by the media and by conspiracy theorists...
Maybe Collins was pop flyin' not being in the spotlight?

Re: The Current Events Thread
Collins was never upset about not walking on the moon, he said he actually gets upset when people get indignant in his place. So he probably wouldn't mind so much.
But still, it was a three-man team and it's too rare to find people who know all three names.

Re: The Current Events Thread
there is a reason why Neil was behind the camera and not in most pics
he was camera shy and most of NASA knew it

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Okay so Weather Channel is doing their typical yearly "Hurricanes in Florida" article, and the picture they show? It's from a restaurant in my hometown. Freeport's even mentioned in the first fucking line. Nick's always puts that sign up when there's a tropical storm on the way.

I don't know how to fix it. OH WELL.
In other news, I guess the NY Times had a small cartoon to honor Neil Armstrong. (Large)

Re: The Current Events Thread
I have to wonder if any sort of ethics will arise out of the steam cell side of things with this. Not putting anybody down or anything, but I just have to wonder if any sort of issue will come purely from the "these cells could have been someone" angle, even if they're just animal cells.
This is one of the more productive things I've seen PETA related to, though, so good for them, I guess.

Re: The Current Events Thread
Recent stem cells in this kind of testing would have never developed into animals/humans. They're usually either taken out of living waste (placenta tissue/fat tissue/etc.) or, more commonly, somatic cells (regular body cells, like cheek cells or skin cells) that have been de-differentiated (de-aged, in most basic terms) into stem cells.
Your cheek cells seperated from you and cultured as stem cells would never turn into another human. There are too many complex chemical signals that are sent to the dividing stem cells from eachother and the mother/father that tell them how to make a human, that it'd be mostly impossible without just fertilizing an egg instead.

I remember hearing about that sorta thing, but I wasn't sure if that was what they were doing here or not.Kamak wrote:Recent stem cells in this kind of testing would have never developed into animals/humans.
Any way, I would't care much, either way. The stigmatism is there, though. I don't think it would be entirely rational to find this unethical either way. I was bring up the possibility that somebody might, but I would be fine with it myself.
Re: The Current Events Thread
It would be irrational to stigmatize such science because you think it is wrong without any basis in reflection.
Why is it wrong to cultivate cells? We do it all the time with every other type of cell. Is it because these can become whatever cell you want them to become? If so, what is the ethical problem with this?
Stem cell research is illegal in the US because it is unpopular. Not for any good reason.
