Well, at least the father didn't mean to kill the guy, he actually was just defending his daughter and it seemed like he was pretty surprised to have killed him.

It's a pretty intense story.

Bad news, everyone.

Lonesome George, the last of the Giant Galapagos Tortoises, (at least his subspecies) has died.
He was approximately 100 years old, and specialists suspected he would've lived for another few decades.

We've witnessed a large species of animal go completely extinct in our lifetime.

It's a shame no one was able to successfully breed him before he died :c

There were two seperate attempts with two females from the Wolf Volcano Island, which were believed to be closely related to the Pinta Island Tortoise, but both clutches of eggs were infertile.

But, yeah. The Pinta Island Galapagos Giant Tortoise, is now presumed to be completely extinct.

(Quick little bump because it was bottom paged.)

Meanwhile, we continue to breed useless animals such as the Giant Panda, which contributes nothing to its ecosystem, just because they are cute.
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.

This fucking sucks. There is smoke all over the god daisies place and now we aren't allowed to launch fireworks for the 4th (or the 24th (a Utah holiday) I assume) because it's so fucking dry and hot and AUGH. Supposedly it was caused by two fucking morons shooting AN EXPLOSIVE TARGET.

It's better to have a fireworks ban on holidays than have entire towns burn to the ground in the middle of a drought.

Here in Texas, we get fireworks bans at least every other year because of bad weather, and the people who violate this usually end up getting in deep trouble (if they police can catch them). Luckily we haven't had any major fires in my area due to fireworks, but no one wants to risk their homes or lives because someone accidentally starts a wildfire.

It sucks, but it's necessary.

Yeah, I agree. But still, kind of disappointed. Oh well I'll get over it. Hey I'm already over it!

Fireworks are always banned here. I don't mind the safe and sane stuff (it's their brand name and it's all on the ground) but I have to put my foot down at any kind of airborne firework. What goes up must come down, and there have been more than a few cars scarred by an errant dancing stick of combustibles.
Stuff goes here later.

It's illegal to buy pretty much anything except small bottlerockets, firecrackers, and other lame stuff

So everyone just hops over to Wisconsin and buys the good stuff there

I'd rather leave it to the professionals. When we don't have burn bans, there's actually places you can go that you can put in $X and they'll set up a fireworks show for you for whatever occasion. Professions do the whole thing and you get your own personal celebration.

Besides, it's btter to go see a fireworks show than do your own. Especially in the suburbs where there's tons of shit you could hit.

Our neighbors once hit a telephone pole with their fireworks because they weren't careful. Our section of the neighborhood was without power for 2 days. In July. In Texas.

Funnily enough, they drove off right after it happened because they didn't want to be caught by the cops. They spent a night at a hotel and came back, only for the cops to arrive within 10 minutes of them getting home (because rustled off neighbors). Worse, they had left their illegal to have at that time fireworks outside when they left, and that the police had picked up when they got there when no one was home.

Got over $500 in fines for doing that, since it was also a burn ban at the time.

Fireworks in general seem kind of boring to me. Seen one colorful explosion, seen them all.

Also it absolutely terrifies our cats.

Professional fireworks are usually much more impressive.

New York state bans all fireworks, including sparklers. Everyone not in the New York city area ignores the ban. 500 gram mortars all day
