With a robot body you could just pop out the broken appendage and attach a new one.

I've never felt particularly attached to my human body so would probably change out to something else - given the opportunity.

Actually I'm incredibly impressed at the human body's ability to repair itself. Sure it breaks down eventually, and some things are beyond it, but compared to machines which cannot mend themselves at all it's a fantastic thing.

Also I wouldn't want to be part of anything that can get put down by a single good solar flare or other EMP.

I figure early human augmentation will be either genetic breeding from birth and mechanical implants for everyone else.
later on, bioengineering will advance far enough to generate improved organic parts even after birth.
Once we reach that point, there will be no such thing as humanity.

I imagine there will be a branch of humans who opt into technological and biological augmentation - and then there will be those who opt out.

At that point humanity will split into 'homo sapiens' and 'homo machina' (or something).

I wouldn't mind augmentation like it was done in the original Deus Ex. The kind with nano-machines strengthening the organic parts. That'd be fine. However I do not want pure mechanical.

In my opinion, biological augmentation really is the way to go. Theoretically it could grant lifespans of thousands of years, with the ability to switch out damaged body parts when needed.
I find that a completely mechanical body would be more of a bother than an organic one.

Also, no matter what advances happen, I will never give up sleeping. Sleeping is dreaming and as a lucid dreamer it's the gateway to the most immersive fantasy experience there is. Video games and 3D got nothing on it.

In theory, bio augs would be for enhancing vital function for lifespan
while mech augs would be for power

a problem in the future would be that soldiers/ working class would live much shorter than the rich, while those who can afford bio augs would be powerless compared to the physical strength of others.

If a mechanical body is unable to make its own replacement parts then it is not as good as a biological body.

An ideal body would make use of both organic and inorganic components so as to limit its susceptibility to malfunction and/or disease - ideally with biological backup systems for mechanical components and vice-versa.

yes, but I think humanity would fear the appearance of cyborgs. Only those who have no choice will take on becoming part machine. well, those people and me.

I wouldn't even worry about appearing human anymore.

Once I had a body that could sustain/repair/adapt itself indefinitely and had some kind of unlimited power cell I'd be out among the stars looking for other forms of life and just generally having a grand adventure.

And then thousands of years later you're insane because most of space is just that.

Possibly, but augmented brains could be partially shut down in some kind of dream state for extended journeys.

Plus removing the human biological element would allow for much greater speeds of travel in space.
