I'm not joking, I just suck at analogies. What I'm trying to say is that the Church will never live this down. Most individual parishes and dioceses are trying to move on and continue following the teachings of their faith.

The Church did get away with the Spanish Inquisition fairly unscathed as far as I know. But it's true that this has greatly hurt their image. They have lost the trust of many of their supporters.

Huh, it looks nice but there's probably some sort of downside I'm not seeing. Other than the fact that it'd never fly in America.

I don't see possibilities for downsides on the consumer side, unless the companies decide to try and find some loophole to still invade customer privacy.

Why wouldn't it fly in America though? Also note that European laws usually take years to get implemented by it's countries (if this even passes).

I feel like I need to step in the discussion, seeing as I basically live next door to the Pope (Both metaphorically and relatively to other members of the forum).
I'd like to point out how criticizing the Catholic Church and Benedictus for paedophilia doesn't make a lot of sense. At least in Italy the percentage of paedophilia acts committed by priests is very low (Something like 5%, probably less). These things are mostly inflated for pretty obvious reasons. Also why the hell are you criticizing them for something they (As a community) have no control over but not for their tendentially homophobic comments? I remember last year when a member of the vatican stated that "Homosexuality is worse than paedophilia"

The criticism isn't because a minority of the clergy commited paedophilia, it's because the majority of the clergy (including the Pope) were involved in the cover-up.

Like Syobon said, they protected many notorious pedophiles and have always refused to publicly acknowledge the crimes they committed or to just apologize. In my opinion, they can say whatever they want about gays or anything, it's up to individuals to choose to listen to what they say or not, but what they did by protecting and hiding pedophiles is criminal complicity. Most of the time, when a pedophile cleric was found, he was just moved to another parish, even when it was obvious that he would abuse children again.

I used "He", but female pedophile clerics exist too.

They also neglected to inform the authorities on the crimes committed, which is a crime of itself.

So now that SOPA and PIPA have been shelved (for now), we need to try and stop ACTA.

That one's going to be hard. Done in secret and it's not just Americans who need to stand up to this.

That's just so disappointing.
