I just think we should stop protecting people from themselves. If someone wants to pig out on McDonalds for twenty years then he's found his secret to happiness. And his blood has been transmuted into secret sauce.

I swear, if I ever get my own country, I'm going to make a law called 'The Natural Selection Laws.'
It will pretty much detail that we will let idiots do it to themselves, but not to others. We may educate them, but if they serious want to screw themselves over, go for it.

According to witness, Yarborough reached for his inhaler while being questioned by the officers. Yarborough’s action caused the police to tackle him to the ground and pepper spray him.
People tend to forget that police are trained to react to this sort of thing quickly.

I read this thing about American police being trained too much like the military lately. Which is why they respond with excessive violence so often.

Basically the idea is "he could have been reaching for a gun, officers or regular citizens could be hurt, we need to take him down." (which is a fairly reasonable line of thought)
However, after they apprehended him, they should have checked to see if he was telling the truth about the inhaler, and administered it to stop the asthmatic attack. That's the part they failed on.

There is a thin line between caution and paranoia. I'm not necessarily saying they acted too fast in this particular case, since I wasn't there and am hardly an expert on the matter. But all too often when things like this happen people make up excuses. Sometimes they may be valid and sometimes they're a bit far-fetched. I could be hiding a bomb in my shoe but I'd rather not get maced when I tie my shoelaces.

Look, it's common knowledge here that if you are being apprehended by the police, you do not make any sudden movements. If the man was having an asthma attack, an extra three seconds to make it clear to the police that he needed an inhaler was all he needed. Instead, he reached for his pocket and got sprayed.

yeah, shame on him for panicking and going for his inhaler when he couldn't breathe

An innocent guy died. This is something that shouldn't happen. So we should try and look in to methods to prevent this from happening in the future.
