My writing teacher hating when people did that. She thinks ellipses are only meant to show when some part of a quote has been cut out. But yeah, I think everyone is fine with using it to show pauses.

Why do people call them ellipses now?

Are they not called full-stops, periods, or extended periods anymore?


And there are other ways to break up a sentence, such as hyphens, semicolons and such; Though there are 'rules' regarding the use of these - especially with semicolons.

I used to use hyphens (-) waaay too much; I've been trying to make use of semicolons as much as possible but I'm not entirely sure I use them correctly all the time.

I tend to think of a semicolon (when used in spoken sentences) as a compromise between a full-stop and a comma, which is kinda what the symbol itself (;) represents.

They are used to show pauses, or trailing off. :/

Like:
"You know what they say..."
"No... I don't think I do."
