I thought I was a good artist.

It's a matter of developed maturity and critical thinking. Most kids don't have that obviously, which is why they think they did a great drawing of Mommy when it's just a stick figure. :U
Artists tend to not have this when they just start out. It's why I get frustrated seeing kids who are 13 and 15 (or whatever age they start seriously drawing) getting made fun for their first tries.
