In India, when your daughter is to be wed you have to pay a large sum of cheddar to the family of her husband. Families, rich and poor, want sons so they will get the dowry of marriage.

But regardless of being in India or China, both believe a girl will grow up essentially paying to be a slave, but a son will almost automatically be successful and be able to survive.

That is one screwed-up social system.

That's also why people in countries like India have so many children. Poor couples in India 'need' a son to help them in the fields and to take care of them once they get old and sick. In addition, if they have more boys, it means more opportunities to spread their family name. The more sons, the better.

On the flip side, girls cost cheddar and 'cannot' do hard labor. Their only job is taking care of the household.

In impoverished countries, most people can't pay for healthcare or medicine. The infant mortality rate is very high because couples can't afford medical treatment. So, they have more babies to ensure that more will be likely to survive to adulthood.

Oh wow. That pisses me off so much.


The fact that people still do that.. augh.

It's gotten so bad in India that it is common practice to genetically alter zygotes so that people can have boys.
