I recently read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
The story is about a game of survival, in which twenty-four contestants are locked inside a huge arena resembling some kind of natural environment (like a forest or an icy plain) and have to struggle to survive. Whoever manages to survive the longest is the victor; the contestants are allowed to kill each other. This game of survival is known as the Hunger Games
However, the story is also about the country of Panem, located at the former site of the USA, which consists out of fourteen cities, the Capitol and Districts 1 through 13. The Capitol is inhabited by the rich and wealthy; the thirteen Districts have to supply the resources needed to keep up the flamboyant lifestyle of the Capitol, and the general populace in these Districts is very poor. About seven decades before the story begins the Districts rioted and tried to fight themselves free from the Capitol, which responded swiftly and destructively; twelve Districts were conquered, the thirteenth utterly destroyed.
That is the reason for the Hunger Games; it's the Capitol's way of reminding the twelve remaining Districts what happened the last time they rioted. And that is why every year in every District one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 are randomly selected to participate in the Hunger Games.
Believe me, you won't regret reading this book. And while you're at it you can also read the first sequel, Catching Fire; the second sequel should be available later this year.
