Eek. Umm. I'm not just talking about overweight.

And I think I said up there that I'm talking about people that became fat through their own actions.
Obviously medical conditions are a different matter entirely.

GAH, I've never really been good at putting a point across.

EDIT - What I'm trying to say is - should we feel sorry for those who created their own handicaps. Not accidental, 'tripped over a wire and now can't move' -because I personally feel that to be tragic- but through years of over-indulgence, whether it's through eating, smoking, alcohol or otherwise.

Or something like that.

Most medical conditions that cause fatness are caused by a persons choices anyway.

Obesity is directly related to what you eat and do as a child.

99.972372% of the time, that's an utter bullshit of an excuse.

Yes, there are medical conditions that cause you to gain weight uncontrollably. But most of the people who are morbidly obese got their purely of their own action.

I don't feel sorry for chronic alcoholics. Therefore I don't feel bad for the immobile obese. I mean, I'm not skinny at all, but I go to the gym minimally three times a week. Yeah. I used to work at Target, so I know the whole "Oh, you need an electric scooter because your feet fell apart from sheer weight" thing.

Yeah, this. I was using what my childhood was actually like as an example, Plasma, not calling that kind of environment satisfactory.

In regards to those fat fat people, I usually try to get to know how they ended up that size before passing judgement. I'm all for being comfortable with your body no matter what size you are, but if your size is bodaciously killing you, I draw the line and ask them to seek help.

About the fat thing--

Maybe because I'm kinda fat (not obese or really unhealthy), but I don't see why it's anyone else business. There are some people out there who just eat all day and never do anything, and a lot of times it is the person's fault, but sometimes shit happens and people don't deal with it well. I used to eat when I was upset and that, just made me more upset and it was a vicious cycle but that's not the point.

So tl;dr who cares

I think the real discussion was whether or not the extremely heavy people actually deserve handicap status. I guess all things considered, having such a title really means that you're incapable of certain movement or whatever, so...

ooh, okay. my bad then.

i guess, i dunno how i feel? because it is a handicap, but it's generally, self-inflicted.

So is shooting yourself in the head, and failing to kill yourself, and giving yourself brain damage instead.

A handicap is a handicap even if it's self-inflicted.

Though in the case of really fat people, they should not be getting government disability cheddar, no matter how fat they get. In fact, if anything the government should be taking cheddar away from them so MAYBE THEY WON'T HAVE THE cheddar TO KEEP EATING THEMSELVES TO DEATH.

I don't even know why the government is giving fat people cheese, anyway.

But seriously, they should be using the cheddar to, for lack of a better word, anti-weight gain programs. Like fat-camps or other shiznit like that.

Except the example you gave is the opposite to what you said. You were complaining about an obese man who you don't know if got that way through over-eating. A man who, as you said yourself, has a breathing disability.

Point is, it's all well and good to say "people whose sole reason for being obese is eating too much and not exercising enough shouldn't be given benefits", but in practice it's all too impossible to actually determine that! You have to consider for all reasons for obesity when talking about obesity as a whole!

A lot of people have trouble losing weight, I can sympathize with that. What actually needs to happen is a crackdown on these "TAKE A PILL AND LOSE FIVE BILLION POUNDS AND MAKE LOVE LIKE A FUCKIN' COUGAR" scams. People become desperate and believe anything they'll say. Then, when it doesn't work, they completely lose hope and eat themselves to death again. It's a vicious cycle.

I can only imagine how much better and cheaper our healthcare would be if people would lose weight, stop smoking, drinking gratuitously and doing drugs.

Eh, just throw all the fat people onto an island for a month.

They'll either lose weight, eat the sand, or cannibalize each other.

But yeah, I sort of like to lump alcoholics in there. No one is throwing booze into your rotting mouth. I don't care how much science claims it is a moderately-inheritable "disorder," just don't drink.
