Why does this thread exist?

I mean, it was a question asked a lot in this thread, but nobody got around to answering it before it got locked. So I thought I'd ask here.

Plasma wrote:You could try, y'know, taking away some of his positive traits. I mean, so far he's got shapeshifting, flight, power of nine different magik types, is a skilled swordfighter and knows advanced combat, is half dragon, and is part of the main cast of one Link v Ganon story. Don't you think that's... a ridiculous amount? And the only weaknesses I can see are... largely superficial.

I mean, after all, a good character is based on their personality and such, not on their powers.
So, I took away three of his Magick abilities, but the shapeshifting is very important to his character, so is flight and swordfighting. Help me come up with some other ideas, like weaknesses, maybe?

Substitution and overusage of Magick drain enormous amounts of his stamina and energy (leaving him helpless), does this help a bit?

And do you think his personality is Mary Sue-ish?

You don't need flight as a seperate power when you can shapeshift... you can turn into a friggen bird, at the very last. Ta dah, one more power removed so he doesn't look like Mr. Perfect.

Then you can not only make him more realistic, but flawed, because if he depends on his shapeshifting to fly, it's also a weakness incase something happens to prevent him from shapeshifting or from his shifted form from taking flight. For example, he's caught a blizzard. It'd be difficult to find a form that could fly safely in such weather. Not to mention this could apply to others things, like breathing underwater, surviving extreme temperatures, etc.

I love shapeshifting, but honestly, it's like the ultimate "god mode" when it comes to creating characters. There are very few cases where the character couldn't overcome their (physical) shortcomings because, bam, they change forms. Problem solved.

Liek droods?
Anyway.
The best way to prevent shapeshifting from being overpowered is limited forms or duration or something like it takes awhile to shift between the forms.

Uhh...his shapeshifting doesn't work like that. He can only switch between his "true form" (dragon man) and his "substitute form" (Hylian). It's actually referred to as "Substitution".

But dangers while flying, like blizzards and storms...good idea! Thnx!

I always liked how the Animorphs series handled it.

It takes about 2 minutes to complete a shapeshift, so they can't do it anywhere you want. And after about 2 hours, they became permanently trapped in the form, so they couldn't stay shapeshifted indefinitely. Bam, now you've just limited it into a way that isn't "godmode" and adds drama to the story. Then again, the Animorphs series was almost entirely psychological-trauma drama.

...

Or you can do it like Beast Boy in Teen Titans, and just make him piss weak. After all, even the biggest and baddest animals don't stand up under a hailstorm of bullets.

It also takes him a lot of energy to "substitute".
