Walter wasn't gay. He didn't seem to have any sexuality. Which isn't that hard to believe, considering they're flipping children! The entire 'Walter is gay' dispute comes squarely out of idiots believing that if you fill a stereotype, you must therefore be a person that the stereotype confers to.
The only thing Walter is is a pansy. Bullying pansies is not a point for a moral outrage over
The 'Softies' don't have a set sexuality, but they're most likely supposed to represent a stereotype. Which is the issue here.

Oh? I wasn't aware that in order to change Dennis the Menace, the creators had to cover up the past. I guess they'll be burning old comic books and hacking any and all websites on the internet that portray the old Dennis, huh?

The old comic is going to stay exactly the same way it was. The new comic will be different.

And yes, things have to be PC now. That's kind of the rules. That's how life is. You could get away with more fifty years ago. But it's not fifty years ago.

Technically the old comics were PC.

It was PC to abuse gays back in the 50s. Not only PC, but it meant you were a good church-going American, who was considered an upstanding member of society.

Kill a gay, and you'd practically be declared a hero.

Our original United Kingdom Dennis the Menace would so kick your American/arian boy's booty!

Wow, once again Karilyn makes horrible, pessimistic generalizations that are probably true for a select few people.

Other than during, a war, I can't think of any situation in the last 200 years in which you'd be considered a hero for killing another human being.

And before you ask, no, the British have never been at war with homosexuals.

I can think of an instance not even 10 years ago in my hometown. Some gay kid was beaten to death at my school. Nobody was ever arrested, the police didn't even give half an attempt to find the people who did it (not that everyone in town didn't have a good idea of who did it). And pretty much everyone in town was talking about how good Christians those boys were for killing the evil fag.

Growing up in redneck land as a lesbian was fucking scary.

I thought the British spent much of their history at war with France.

Do you do anything but bitch? Bad phrasing on my part, but seriously. Stop bitching.

I just found it weird that some of you are criticizing the comic of being homophobic or something, when not only did the comic never state any characters were gay, but not even the wikipedia article said anything about homosexuals at all.

I also agree with Plasma's point about the fact that the characters are children, and don't actually have any sexuality.

It's the stereotype thing. Maybe it was just aimed at 'softies' or maybe it was aimed at gays, I don't know, but it's something that has to be read inbetween the lines. Of course they're not going to outright says gays, that'd be ridiculous.

I'm hoping it's not gays, but it could be. I don't know.

I'll try, but there are so many things wrong with this thread that it's very difficult.

Right, look, I'll spell it out:
Walter is a mish-mash of every personality trait thugs bash. He is a mommy's boy, a geek, a nerd, a spoiled brat, a teacher's pet, a favourite among adults, is afraid of everything, is very polite, and is girly. The entire drama in this thread is based on that last point, more specifically, that bullying girly guys is horribly offensive to homosexuals.
Can you not see what is wrong with this picture?

Oh yeah, and I seemed to have completely forgotten: the last Dennis The Menace TV series gave him a girlfriend.

Umm... sorry, what? Can't help but notice that you were the one complaining about how ridiculous something is, and he was the one making the point that you're over-reacting.

It's a stereotype. The stereotype is that gay men basically what you said above. I haven't read the comics or seen the TV show or whatever, so I don't know if it's covert gay bashing or just making fun of "girly" boys or what. The issue is with the possible use of the stereotype, and how it's used to attack gays, if indeed they were using the stereotype of gay men.

I wasn't over-reacting. I said it's ridiculous that they're changing it and, basically, just pretending the old version didn't really happen. I phrased it badly. Water pulled the more extreme possible meanings from what I said, and it bugged me. The end.

In a way they are being more offensive to gay people. By having Dennis not bully Walter because Walter seems "gay" then they are implying that all gay males act like a girly stereotype.

Anyway, I've never seen/heard of this show before now, but from what I've read, it isn't going to last very long like this.

I'm, confused by how that works.
