So at the end of last month my roommate moved out. Rent and everything was squared away by him as the primary account holder. I paid him $425, as I had done every month for six months prior.

This month is the first time rent is due and I am the primary account holder! I am responsible for the rent! Yay! Before my old roommate moved out, we advertised an available room for $425/mo, which was the same rate I was paying. We got a new person, he lives here now, and he's... okay. THats a long bitchy subject for a different time.
Anyway. $425 a month.

The online resident portal updated with our rent due.

my roommate was paying $166.45 in rent
for 7 months
and I paid more than twice that

Or I can be a wretched lying asshole and just pay under $200 a month for my room in northeast Dallas - which is wildly cheap.

on the other hand, the lease has MY NAME and OLD ROOMMATE'S NAME on it currently, since he lied to the leasing office and said he would be here through the end of June but he was out on a business trip (lie, he moved to Atlanta last month), I can go to the leasing office and tell them he abandoned the lease and TANK his credit score as payback and also put new roommate on the lease legally.

I'm seriously fucking considering long-distance ruining his life to the best of my ability because WHAT THE SHIT WE LIVED TOGETHER FOR 7 MONTHS AND HE WAS LYING TO MY FACE THE ENTIRE TIME ABOUT RENT COSTS

I woke up my roommate and explained everything. He said to keep the $425 he paid this month, he was planning to spend it on rent anyway so its cool and we can just sort it out for the future. So that is amazing oh my god
and then I spent half an hour marching angrily around the apartment complex in the middle of the night on the phone with mum. I woke her up to talk to her (she's a timezone ahead). I explained everything and also said I could go to the leasing office in the morning and report that my old roommate abandoned the lease and tank his credit and she (one of the leading moral directors of my life and a generally good person) said "well, he did bring this upon himself"

Not saying it's not shitty, but did this former roommate explicitly say rent was 50/50? Was the difference made up by utilities and such? Or is he definitely a lying sack of shit who absolutely deserves what is about to happen?
