I have nothing against genuine emotions, but it feels like the overwrought flagellation of the online community detracts from actual emotional content. Its kinda like how everyone used the word "awesome" for anything that was even mildly interesting, completely sapping it of meaning.
Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
The internet is permanently infatuated with hyperboles, don't think that's going to change any time soon.

I should have learned my lesson after I said on another forum that the whole Companion Cube fad after Portal was released was stupid and shallow. Never ever tell an online community that what they're blubbering about currently isnt the best thing ever.Obnosim wrote:Yeah Stranger, how dare you have an opinion

Screw it, I'm going for it.
Undertale is a remarkably creative and well written game, but its not a giant sob fest, the characters arent THAT engaging, and I really dont get why so many people are losing their minds over it.

I agree. I like the game, and even voted it the best game ever in the recent gamefaqs poll, but that was just to make people mad.TheStranger wrote:I should have learned my lesson after I said on another forum that the whole Companion Cube fad after Portal was released was stupid and shallow. I really like the music in it and the Sans boss fight, but other than that the humor seems to be the only thing that carries it. I still really like the game, but I definitely see where you're coming from.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
I loved Undertale but I didn't connect with the characters that strongly either. But then again, I don't connect with or empathize with many characters in the first place. The only time Undertale got me a little teary-eyed was right at the end of the true pacifist run.
However.
I know of someone who had/has a very rough life with their abusive mother. Their mother is constantly putting them down and making them feel like shit in order to make herself feel better. This person cried when they met Toriel because the idea of a kind and caring mother figure was something that they desperately wanted in their own life.
And when/if you accidentally kill Toriel...it was very hard for them to take.
Different things resonate with different people, Stranger.

Re: Things that make you cry.
I get rather emotional with character-related events as well.
Mother 3 was a really difficult game for me as I have a whole lot of anxiety issues about family and paranoid fears that bad things are going to happen that are out of my control, so a whole lot of the character development in that game hit way too close to home for me.
I could barely handle the Boom and Bewm boss fight in Borderlands 2, even. The very concept of taking someone's sibling away from them was horrible. Though I felt much better about it when I realized that bosses respawn and rationalized it as them also having access to the New-U respawn things.

Don't blame me; I voted for Kodos.

Actually, uh.
The New-U stations are considered non-canon by the writers, I assume that'd also count towards re-battling boss fights.
Look on the bright side, they're both together in a better place.

Main impact I got from Undertale was how your actions make or break how the characters interact with you, meaning that depending on your choices you may not befriend or find a character's redeeming qualities, or get a completely wrong perception of them.choosing whether to go back and befriend Undyne gives you a wildly different perspective on her character.
There were some things I didn't like though. Alphys rubs me the wrong way a bit because of how forced the NERD thing can be. She's a decent character with a good arc, but she feels weak compared to the other main cast. Except Asgore because he sucks lol. I also wanted a date/friendship with Mettaton. He went from a big part of the game to being shoved out for Alphys. Hotland and The Core felt squished together to be Mettaton's section and it feels like a boss is missing? Also I feel like Toby gave up halfway into making the geno route. We go from Undyne the Undying and Papyrus sparing you to an empty endgame, Mettaton being a joke who you don't even know much about (he could still have character without revealing his entire quirkiness and empathy/admiration of humans). And at a certain point the game just stops trying to make you hurt at doing this. The fact that the Sans fight has become a proving grounds is antithetical itself, and I wish there were more jumping off points and grey area. It just doesn't feel mechanically... Substantially invested in. That's partly the point but I'd rather full geno be more than a couple of hard boss fights and lack of endgame feelings.
Also while we're discussing annoying things I'm definitely over the fang asking over Sans as being a tortured precious cinnamon bun and I'm definitely over the popularity of Megalovania overshadowing all of the other music in the game because Homestuck and Having a Bad Time. Papyrus is best brother and Undyne is best character.
Undertale was cathartic and really good. I don't like the meme hype but I'm glad it is popular since following the game before release. I didn't cry but some parts had more impact than others, and crying isn't the pinnacle of emotional feeling, just a realized threshold of emotional release crossed easier on some days and harder on others. I've cried a couple of times at thing's I wouldn't really consider the be EXTREMELY IMPACTFUL LIFE CHANGING MOMENTS, and moments of actual impact have had me dry eyed. You never know. Maybe some people are being facetious about everything making them cry (actually I think that's the point of "HELP I'M CRYING" comments to gain quick attention to a thing), maybe it's genuine. Not really my place the judge if they're lying about crying or whether crying is justified. I just got my own experiences to compare with.
And Undertale has not reached Portal levels of annoyance.

Then again I feel sad for Claptrap. Poor guy.
Okay you uh, you continue sympathizing over the crazy folks who used a WWI howitzer cannon to obliterate you.Airra wrote:SSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!Liraxus wrote:Actually, uh.
