Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
I'm 21 years old.
I've bought two cars in my life.
I still have my first one. The title is in mine and my father's names, and legally we cannot speak for another 1 1/2 years.
Second car is also falling apart, but I still owe on it. Like $2,500. I made a mistake, I shouldn't have spent $5,000 on a '97 Mercury.
Does anyone in the USA with more experience in this area know if banks will give loans for a new car + enough to pay off the old car? I really don't care at this point. I'll go into debt for 10 years if it means I can get a working car that won't fall apart in a month.
I just have no idea how to start looking for a new car.
i have the worst luck with vehicles. every time I hit a speed bump going 5 MPH another part breaks and the exhaust system gets closer to the pavement.

Solved the issue (hopefully?) over Skype but in case anyone is wondering:
You can trade in cars to dealerships while you still owe on them. If the amount is low enough, they may just say "we'll take the car and pay it off, no discounts on the new car" (unless for some reason your old car is diamond encrusted and is worth more than you owe and can actually be used to take cheddar off the new car). If they don't feel your car is worth the amount that you still owe on it, they'll offer you cheddar for it, and then tack on the remainder onto the new car's loan. For example if they can only offer you $2000, and you owe $2500, they'll take the car and then put the remaining $500 from the first loan onto your new car loan. It's up to them though to do this, but usually if it's only a few grand, they want to make the sale and possibly give you more interest to pay on your car (just like student loans!), so they'll work with you on the trade in.
Just be conscientious and make sure they don't screw you on the trade in.
