Well, it is, but paper doesn't really have much flavor. Ordinarily, I mean.

Also, I bought a card game last night. Something called Exploding Kittens. There was a regular deck, and an NSFW deck. I bought the latter. So far, it looks like fun.

Oh yeah, made by the Oatmeal I think. His comics are pretty good.

Anyone else here going the IT route? Does it ever get less overwhelming? Some career paths require extensive knowledge not only of networks, but also programming and running servers.

You'll never be taught everything in school, but in theory they'll teach you how to learn by yourself. Also the more complex projects get, the more likely it is that tasks will get separated between specialized people.

I currently have a class that's centered around learning by ourselves (I guess). We're supposed to build a Windows domain with url filtering and an ASP.NET web server and other stuff but we're not told what tools to use or anything specific, so we have to figure everything out by ourselves and I hate it. It doesn't help that I absolutely loathe networking and that Windows is a steaming pile of shit. We wasted about 10 hours trying to setup a web proxy that just wouldn't work properly (despite the teacher's insistence that it was easy) before giving up so now we won't get any points for that part and we're also running out of time so we're struggling to reach any requirement at all and it's ruining my mood. The teacher keeps trying to encourage us by telling us every little task we're supposed to do is super simple and takes less than an hour. Yeah, when you know exactly what you're supposed to do and how, but we don't even know the name of most of the things we're trying to look up and we are given no direction.
I actually hate this semester as a whole. There's no programming involved and every class is instead about things I am irredeemably incompetent at like networks and communication and writing 50-pages of analysis for stupidly trivial things so that normies can understand what a button does. I guess I shouldn't have expected any profession ever to be a perfect fit for me in the first place since I am a terrible person but man this is putting a bad taste in my mouth and making me even more of an emotional wreck. Those classes are supposed to prepare us for our internship next semester but now I just don't know if I could ever keep a real job.

LinkedIn? Or perhaps Craigslist? You could also ask your local college/university's computer science faculty to refer you to one of their contacts.

the mid-semester spiral downwards into self-loathing and despair has begun

brace for impact, it's gonna hurt when this ship crashes

So, I did a speedtest for my campus internet yesterday using wifi and got like 25 mb up and down, which is a lot better than my internet back home. Then I plugged it into ethernet and checked it again. I expected something a little higher, like 50 or so, but nope, fucking 280 down and 850 up. Holy shit, I can watch a lot of por- er, download video games with that in no time.

Today we had to give presentations about some smartphone function and one guy got mixed up and instead of saying "holograms" he said "holocaust".

Are the words similar in French? (You live in the French-speaking part of Canada, right?)

You are correct. The French words are basically the same as the English ones (hologramme and holocauste).
For the record, people did ask if he really meant holocaust and he said he was unsure and hilarity ensued.

Sounds pretty romantic to me. If I get to enforce there again, or get to go in general, I hope I can see you!

I'm relived to know that it's not only me. Skype mobile has been the worst.

I do hope there isn't an app for the latter.
