Leaf greens are virtually impossible to get kids to eat, because not only are they bitter, they have a HORRIBLE texture. I cant even eat them as an adult.

Besides which negative experiences with food often stick around with children so if they try things too early and dislike them, they hold grudges against it much longer. You still have people in their 20's who refuse to try something they last had when they were 9.
This also frustrates me because my sis-in-law tries to force stuff that her kids aren't ready for under punishment of threats to the point where if you mention it they start crying. If you're going to make children try new things you have to make it a positive environment. The instant you're forcing them into something and getting mad at them is when you're going to lose control of the situation and cause longer-term problems for their diet. Granted they're kids and you don't want to feed them the same thing everyday, but they're also kids and don't need to appreciate a salad at the age of 4.

What's up with you guys' hatred for salad? Sure, some salads like rucola are quite bitter, but iceberg for example tastes like water (and in fact is 96% water). Be mindful of some mixed bags though, dunno what variant they put in those but they can be extremely bitter.

I don't eat too healthily, but I've always loved green vegetables. Well, broccoli and celery at least. They don't really have much of a taste to me, so it's kinda like crunching on ice without the danger of chipping a tooth or the coldness, so I've always liked eating them. Same with carrots. I hated spinach though. I can eat it now with a little salt and pepper, or if I've got potatoes or something to go with it, but that's about it.
Also, I like salads as long as they're simple salads. Iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and maybe a little cheese or mushrooms if I'm in the mood.
Man, now I'm hungry.

The only vegetable I eat with any regularity is yellow onions, which I eat a TON of, but I also eat a lot of chili peppers. Other than that, I like corn and carrots well enough, but never get around to eat them much

My pet peeve when it comes to salad is when the ONLY green in it is iceberg lettuce, especially if they don't even use the leafy part. Iceberg is like the watermelon of vegetables, in that it is basically just crispy water. If I wanted something that just tasted like water I would have... water. I'll eat it, but its just so... boring. I don't even know which greens I really like, but I'll eat em if they're mixed in a salad.
I'm actually noticing that I'm warming up to a lot more veggies that I didn't like at all when I was younger. I've always liked broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. Now I like spinach, onions, peppers, and tomatoes (but only the small ones, I hate how the big ones are all mushy and gross in the middle).
I don't think I'll ever warm up to Brussels sprouts, though.

Why do you think adults have less issues with vegetables than kids? Our palette changes as we age, kids are MUCH more sensetive to bitter tastes, which is why its so hard to get them to eat vegetables.SaintCrazy wrote:My pet peeve when it comes to salad is when the ONLY green in it is iceberg lettuce, especially if they don't even use the leafy part. One of my favorite salads to make has romaine lettuce with goat cheese, dried cranberries and garlic croutons. Sometimes I'll put in a little of fried chicken too.
I pretty much use honey mustard on all salads, although I always forget that I like thousand-island too.
also fuck iceburg

Rucola with honey mustard vinaigrette is my favourite simple salad combo.

Adults are also used to pain and disappointment, which is what bitter vegetables taste like.TheStranger wrote:Why do you think adults have less issues with vegetables than kids? In other news, in case you guys didn't know, Katie and Norrin have started a blog about building electronic things.

So a complete stranger barged in today, an older woman from down the street with Alzheimer's. My sis answered the door and the lady just took a seat and started making polite conversation. Turns out she had wandered away from home and liked the look of our house. I ran out to her house, fetched her daughter and that was about it.

Nah, I love salad, I just hate that it's the default answer to fixing childhood obesity in elementary schools. Local school added a salad bar and was upset that kids didn't know how to make salads and that they poured cheese and bacon and ranch into the bowls with very few veggies. Also doesn't help that most salads I've had in school were essentially cole slaw, which most adults don't even like.Syobon wrote:What's up with you guys' hatred for salad? Yea, my school started incorporating salads about halfway through last year. The lettuce was always really soggy and it just ruined the whole things because instead of a salad bar, all the salads were premade for us.

Yeah, here it's either premixed or $5 salad bar, which most parents don't want to spend on top of a $2 lunch. Elementary schools get complimentary salad bars to promote healthy eating (and because they don't eat much salad) but like I said they constantly complain that kids eat toppings and carrots rather than onions, tomatoes, and most importantly lettuce/spinach/greens.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
I think when I was really young but old enough to start having solid food, my mum would just give me some of what the adults were having for dinner. Or something like that? Either way, I've always loved veggies (with the exception of celery and raw onion), though we tended to have gravy with them the majority of the time so I don't really associate many vegetables with being bitter.
Thinking about it, I don't think I was ever that big on fruit. I'd rather eat a bowl of steamed veggies than a bowl of fruit. Unless I'm able to sprinkle some sugar on the fruit in which case eh, okay.
Then again I've been known to just munch on a whole lettuce like an apple so maybe I'm just weird
