Fun fact: the original robocop was filmed in Dallas, despite being set in Detroit.
In a couple scenes you can see where they took the crazy architecture of city hall, and added a ton of floors in cgi to look like a futuristic apartment complex.

I totally do forget sometimes, even when Space Center Houston commercials are on TV a ton.

I also know of Denton, because a friend lives there. Otherwise my knowledge of Texasy places would be Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Galveston. I feel like those are more names of Texas places than most people not anywhere near Texas would know.

Re: Things that piss you off
i can confirm that almost nobody outside of texas knows what galveston is, even though houstonians consider it a part of houston instead of its own city

Re: Things that piss you off
It still weirds me out that people outside of Texas even talk about Austin. It's just... not Texasy to me. Other cities should come up before it when talking about Texas. (DFW for Texas stereotypes, San Antonio for That Thing People Remember, and Houston for the reasons outlined above.)
I guess it's because I've lived here for 20 years and remember when no one cared about it; then sometime in the past 10 years it became Cool and everyone has to act like they know all about it. Austin is the nerd no one liked who showed up to the class reunion years later as a success, and now people try to schmooze on him.

Re: Things that piss you off
I'm guessing people only know about Austin because they learned that its the Texas capital in their social studies class. One visit to that neighborhood next to UT (gah I forgot what that street is called, been too long since I've been there) and they'll know that its not like Texas at all.
Dallas is a decently good sample of what Texas is like, minus the small-town aspect. As long as you're not in one of the mega-rich neighborhoods. I think a closer example would be a college town that's decently big, but still in podunk nowhere. So College Station or Lubbock.
Also I don't like Houston because it smells funny and the people seem kinda dickish (especially at U of H, god I've never met a more unsportsmanlike crowd, I've been there for football games)
...that reminds me, I want to find one of those cheeky "Keep Dallas Normal" shirts. I feel like I gotta rep my almost-hometown.

Went to Dallas today on a train to see some Art Museums. The Nasher Sculpture Center is the worst and costs cheddar, go to the Dallas Museum of Art or the Crow Collection of Asian Art instead.

Re: Things that piss you off
That's a pretty good description of it, I feel. Things like word of mouth on social media and the big festivals like SXSW probably rose it to this level of prominence over the last handful of years to where everyone started to take notice.Shining Charizard wrote:then sometime in the past 10 years it became Cool and everyone has to act like they know all about it. I complain that it'd be nice for Houston to have some more recognition, but at the same time everyone schmoozing on my hometown sounds like it would become obnoxious after a while.

Isn't all that ooze in the air obnoxious already?

I know Galveston because I played GTA San Andreas a lot and had the Country radio station on.shazza wrote:i can confirm that almost nobody outside of texas knows what galveston is, even though houstonians consider it a part of houston instead of its own city

Re: Things that piss you off
This is true. We don't need metaphorical junk of people wanting to get cozy with us polluting the city when we already have enough real junk in the air to worry about and clean up.Barabba wrote:Isn't all that ooze in the air obnoxious already?
