Re: Things that piss you off
I woke up with pain in my neck and can hardly rotate it to the right at all. I guess I slept on it wrong. Then I got invited to a friend's house, figured I'd have some fun. I got here and his girlfriend is here too. I've not got anything against her, but I'm feeling like a third wheel and it's kinda annoying. I would just go home, but by the time I'd be able to leave, she'd be leaving too, so I might as well stay.
Hate being a third wheel. It's alright in public, but where they're at his house, they're being all mushy gushy with each other. It's just weird and awkward and boring, haha.

Re: Things that piss you off
i know at least in my case i'm not a very good artist so i can't really change/exaggerate features and make people look different in that way so i do really suffer from that as well but i don't MEAN to you know? like i try i'm just not good at it. i guess it just depends on whether or not you really know that artist and their work though.

OK, you need to give people longer than bodaciously A MINUTE to answer a text before you text back asking where they are, especially when it's 7:30 in the morning.
Mom
Mom seriously
It's kind of annoying getting five texts in a succession before I have a chance to answer any of them.
Also you really can't be upset at me for not answering your texts that say things like "pop flyin' Thursday", I don't know how to respond to that.

Re: Things that piss you off
To be honest it bothers me a little too. Mostly when it's sort of arbitrary. I get that they are trying to reflect diversity but they just need to go the extra step and research. Look at the different noses, different body types and different eye shapes etc.
It's like when they want to express a character is Asian and do it by giving them slanted eyes. I'd say I'm not bothered if it's an original character (because they're more likely to learn as they get better at art) but if they've taken a canonically Caucasian/light skinned character and made them 'black' by recolouring them brown under the pretence of diversity... that's empty. That bothers me a little. If a personal in genuinely interested in portraying diversity, I should expect a bit of effort.
I can make concession for skill level of course, but if I see a lot of it without improvement I'm generally unimpressed by it. (Usually artists that do that suffer from same face syndrome.)
I also think what annoys Nach is that the artist doesn't acknowledge that failing in themselves. Not that they are trying to draw diverse characters.

I'm black and have white features though.
I think it's important to remember that if someone is drawing a poc, they're not necessarily doing it for the sake of diversity.

Or, y'know, whatever.
Re: Things that piss you off
But you're one example. I could then find 50 other people with your skin tone, but not your face and body. It's not about saying there are no black people with 'white' features. It's about 'black' not being just a colour (or any other race/nationality).
It's super important for an artist to recognise that when deciding that their character is Turkish or a Croat or Sudanese.
Even if you're not looking for a diverse cast, I would still expect research.
I suppose it boils down more to the same face syndrome than it does to a race thing.

Re: Things that piss you off
One of my characters is black, but her face actually resembles the sister of one of my childhood friends--who happens to be part Japanese and not black at all. It happened without me realizing it when I was drawing her one day and I really liked how it looked.
I think that researching different looks for different features is important, yes. But there should be a limit to the extent that we 'code' certain features, because otherwise they just turn into stereotypes.

Re: Things that piss you off
I'm not even talking about coding, that's what my problem is with just resorting to skin colour. The problem isn't with people who chose to use different skin tones, the problem is with young artists insisting Character Z is from Country Y and not bothering to care about what that means for the character. Do the research, find out if it is possible for people from Country Y to look like Character Z.
I mean, what happens if they decide they want to draw a black person with albinism? How will they express that if they only ever use the one kind of facial features?

Re: Things that piss you off
The optimistic part of me wants to say that someone who has a black character with albinism is aware enough to know that they need to draw better and more distinctive features.
Things like hairstyles can help too.

I'd say that someone drawing anybody should try to draw distinctive features. Even two Caucasians shouldn't look the same.

Re: Things that piss you off
Well yeah, but my point was that someone who has a more unique character like a black person with albinism is *hopefully* past their sameface phase.
