I have to do an English project on why there aren't many economic opportunities where I live and what some of the solutions could be to fix it. Thing is, I live in a small community, so there is almost no information available about anything here. Secondly, I don't even think things are that bad here economically...at least no worse than they are anywhere else.

My group got the topic of population and geography and what effect they have on the economy here. Which I think has almost nothing to do with the economy here. In the 50's there were a lot of jobs and stuff available here and neither the population or the geography has hardly changed at all since then. It's kinda starting to piss me off. I guess I'll just bullshit something and hope for the best.

The population did change. It's not just numbers, it's also life expectancy and average age. Baby-boomers are retiring but still active and used to a certain quality of life. Thus we can expect to see jobs being created in the service sector (for health and recreational purposes). Also, your town's geography might not have changed, but it's influence on the economy probably has. Before globalization there was much less competition, people were limited to the products that came from the immediate surroundings, while today you have access to products from everywhere so you can pick the cheapest ones. So you won't find new jobs in factories that aren't highly specialized. So some solutions for your town would be to focus on services and high technology.

Wow, thanks! I don't think I would have been able to think that deeply into it. I did kind of think about the products being everywhere part, but I worded it poorly/didn't elaborate enough about it. I'll try and use what you said. Thanks again!

I tried the library and most of what they had had to do with what the other groups in my class are doing (The history of the area, attractions, etc.). I did find one book that had some stats in it that I used, but it wasn't much. I also tried talking to some of the older people in the community and ask them what could be the cause of the poor economic situation here, but a lot of them wanted to blame it on the influx of Indians coming into town and buying all the businesses here. That sounded a bit racy, so I don't want to use it.

Yeah sounds like anything demographics-related would be a good direction to go. Maybe see if you can get info on different neighborhoods and see the differences between racial background, income, population, etc, then compare that to the past. if you can find some census data (http://www.census.gov/ if you're in the US) that could give you some data to work with. If your community is really small it might still be useful to look at trends in your immediate area.

Edit: oh, and if you do end up talking about race, just stick to the facts and try to find out why any changes have happened, who is the most disadvantaged and why, etc. Most cities tend to have "segregated" neighborhoods that arose from the Jim Crow days and they just kinda stuck. Dunno if your town is that old but if it is it could be helpful to go all the way back to how the city started.

Alright. I already compared my community with some of the other surrounding communities, but I didn't go into much detail with it, so I can do that I guess. I already got all the information I could from the census and used it, but it wasn't a whole lot.

As for who's the most disadvantaged is hard to tell. The population here is 98% white, so it's hard to really compare different races. I guess the low amount of different races could be a disadvantage to them though.

As for going back to how the city started, that'd probably be something for the history group to look into. I could probably use some of their findings though.

Haha, I didn't mean to turn this thread into a homework help thing, but thanks you guys!

Once again, I proved I can be an insensitive jerk to the ones I love, and I'm really, really rustled of at myself for that.

Yes, Michelle. I know that I played that wrong.
Yes, I am fully aware that my E6 and F#6 are out of tune and am trying to correct it.
I've already tried to drill through that section full of sixteenth notes and I know that I can't get my fingers to play it as marvelous and fucking amazing as you.
No, I don't know why I can't get my hands to do what I want them to, despite already having practiced 90+ minutes every fucking school day.

Yes, I'm aware that you are the magical perfect flute goddess, and I'm terrible lowly scum. I don't need you to remind me every ten goddamned minutes during rehearsal.

I hate it when you ask somebody for (or even just about) a certain item and their immediate very first response, no matter how innocuous and mundane and common the item, is "what do you need it for"
I'm not asking about a gun or a one-of-a-kind artifact or a dildo, just answer my question.
