Helping my Mom recover emails and Facebooks is the most aggravating thing in the universe. All she knows is "Okay I don't know what this all is, so I'm going to make a new one" just throws things out like nothing! Augh this behavior is rubbing off on my little brother where he can think that if he doesn't finish his food or we have food he doesn't want to eat we'll just throw it away after we bought them. I already get upset being around my Mom but just when she's making so many and then complaining how it's a stupid email thing, or stupid computer makes me so angry. Makes too many of them for her own good, and it's so annoying. I don't even understand how she messed up her Facebook thing. I set it up with her, so it should all be there! I think she changed her email to something, but even though we looked through all the pages we couldn't figure it out.

Moving date might be a week later than I thought, because the guy who was managing the program fell behind on his floor waxing schedule.

This year our college decided they automatically will sign us up for their "text butler." What this does it it auto buys all your books for you. You can opt out of it but the thing is they do not guarantee that the books will be in the store if you do no want to have this "text butler." The only good thing about this is they will be classified as a rental unless you want to buy them at the end of the semester. Apparently, the supplier was sick of people buying their books from amazon for cheaper. I decided to opt out because every year they try to give me these three books that are always recommended for my DMA classes.

man half the time we didn't even USE the books assigned to us. it was like the teachers had to assign a textbook but 90% of the time they didn't make us use it because there wasn't a point. then again i have an art degree.

i'd always wait til after the first day of class to see if we even needed the book to get it. saved me SHIT-tons of cheddar, already on top of buying them from b&n or amazon after i couldn't get a pell grant anymore and my book voucher went away.

Shazza, I'm going for a science degree and I can say the same thing. I haven't bought a textbook in YEARS. Whenever the professor tells us we'll need the book for some misc subject he just won't want to cover in lecture, still nobody gets the book......

That's the kinda shit they don't tell you about college in high school/orientation (probably because they want you to go a few semesters of blindly buying the textbooks before you figure it out yourself...)

Usually my science classes use the textbook at least for problems and stuff, though a few don't use them at all. At the very least they can be somewhat useful for review and study purposes.

It's my education courses that kill me. They're mostly discussion anyway, we usually have readings in one book while the others gather dust, usually because the prof pulls some BS like "oh well I thought this book had some really good stuff in it, you should keep it for your career as a teacher and read it on your own time"

hahahahahahahahahahahaha no.

Also, I waited for the first day of class one year, but it bit me in the butt because in some of my classes, we needed ot do readings or problems from the textbook the first week of class, and I wouldn't get my books in for another week or so. So I buy them early-ish to be safe, I'm just not pop flyin' about it.

my first class is always fucking orientation and "who are you" and we never did any work lol

i hate when they tell you "read it on your own time its a good resource" coz 90% of the time it isn't x: i have kept a few books though, like the 'bible' to the program i use to animate, an animator's survival kit with really great examples and tips written by the guy who directed Who Framed Roger Rabbit and created The Thief and the Cobbler (<33), and an aftereffects book. but those are like. legit useful lol.

I tend not to buy any textbooks that I can find elsewhere, like in the library, because textbook publishers love to make new editions every year or so, even if there's nothing really changed. This means I can spend $200 to buy, say, a science textbook and when I bring it back for book buyback I'm suddenly informed the class won't be using it next semester because of a new edition, which means I ate the entire cost.

It always helps to physically go up to your professor and ask "What percentage of the exams will be based off of the text?" It sounds shallow, but they really ahould understand. You're there to learn the material, but the exams are meant to be the tangible proof that you learned something. If their exams are going to be based on the lectures, which they probably will, but the textbook is still legitimately a good resource, they'll tell you to go use the textbook in the library. If the exams are based on the textbooks (which will happen, and it'll blindside the hell out of you...) then hopefully they'll tell you. Though given the fact that your professors want you to go to class and listen to them drabble on, chances are they'll tell you to use the book that's available in the library. If the exams are based on the textbook, they know that students will skip class and just read the book at home.

I've only ever had one class have the exams be based on the textbook. It was a social psych class, and, seriously, 40 out of the 50 questions that would be on the exam would begin with "From your text." She figured it out, though, because towards the end more and more chunks of the exam would be on the lecture material...

I pretty much buy all of the books anyways because the stores close a week or two after classes start, so you're fucked if you need them.

Most of the time, I don't really need them, but I keep ahold of them since I often am sick so I can keep up, and in a few classes, I've used it instead of the instructor's instructions because I don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

The one time I didn't have a book because Amazon was dicking around, my class started doing assignments out of them, and I had to wait 3 hours for the library copy to become available because everyone else didn't buy the book because "lol, $100 for beer cheddar".
