She's not talking about candy and chips. She's talking about prepackaged dinners. You know why the poor are noted to have higher rates of obesity, despite having less cheddar for food? Most places, the fruits and vegetables that are actually worth anything nutritionally (in other words anything except iceberg lettuce and russet potatoes) are expensive, because it is far more perishable than macaroni and cheese and hot dogs or a can of spaghettios. You can buy a fuckton of calories worth of ramen, hot dogs, dehydrated potatoes and pizza for the same cost of a couple of meals made of fresh vegetables and meat that also take more time to prepare.Madican wrote:I honestly have no idea where you're shopping if fresh fruits and veggies are more expensive than junk food, Dire. Aren't you in Australia actually?

I was at the store earlier. It wasn't a real grocery run, but I'm trying to eat healthier, so I was looking around at some of the foods and ingredients and whatnot, and unprocessed food is ridiculously expensive.
Re: Things that piss you off
Meat, yeah. But fruits and vegetables really aren't all that expensive.

Re: Things that piss you off
Time is also a commodity. You're working 60+ hours a week and you don't have the time to actually cook or prepare a healthy meal. Easier to just actually buy some fast food or get some microwave dinners.

Untrue in some cases, and you have to consider the fact that fresh fruits and vegetables expire quickly - and as such are purchased more often - moreso than boxed, preserved, processed foods.D-vid wrote:Meat, yeah. But fruits and vegetables really aren't all that expensive.
(Also good news in that my mother's unemployment finally went through and she'll be getting $900 from what she's been owed up to this point. Lots of stress relief there.)

There are too many new people on here.

Is there a farmers market or something you can check out? Those places tend to have low prices and wholesome food. Even things like home-made honey and molasses. Some even encourage haggling.
Stuff goes here later.

Oh goddamn it. The latest reactionary propaganda spewed out by Harper's conservatives is a show depicting real immigration agents arresting real immigrants and deporting them. I'm not overly nationalist but shit like that really makes me wish Quebec had seceded already.

Re: Things that piss you off
Still sore as hell from the weekend, and for some reason I'm feeling anti-social, though that was fixed a bit by spending time with friends where I just kinda sat there and got to unwind and talk to them.
Also, realized that apparently we needed a rough draft of an essay turned in on Monday when we picked our topic on the Friday before Spring Break.
What the heck, prof? Out of 25 people in the class, 5 were with you all of Spring Break doing research, and the other 5 top students in your class (me included) had legitimate (and weeklong) commitments. Besides that, we already have 2 papers due in the next couple weeks (one due Wednesday) with a lot of calculations that had to be done, and the final copy of this paper isn't even due until the last week of class.
I'm kinda hoping he put the date, then forgot about it, because frankly, there was no notice or anything about this, and it seems kinda bullshit.
Either way, the grade for the rough draft doesn't mean jack squat in the scheme of things, so I'd rather just eat it. It still kinda pisses me off though because I don't want to feel like I have to catch up later.
This week's paper is my main priority, and it's shaping up to be Hell on Earth if I don't get some questions about it answered tomorrow. Thank God I have about half of it BS'd out and the other half is data I've been sitting on for awhile.

This was about the states. When I was in Florida I was aghast at how cheap shit food(stuff that is mostly carbs, sugar, salt, preservatives and colours) was compared to fresh vegetables.Madican wrote:I honestly have no idea where you're shopping if fresh fruits and veggies are more expensive than junk food, Dire. And part of the problem was you couldn't just buy the small amount you needed so that it wouldn't go off before you used it all (the perishable issue) a lot of fresh food items were in bulk. I can't say this is what all of the states was like but definitely the publix I shopped at over there.
Being FitBit friends with Dire is like the most painful thing ever

Dear lord I really hope tonight is busy.
I'm here basically alone, and my boss says he'll dispatch later tonight if we get busy.
This is so terrible, I should have shot myself in the foot or something so I could've stayed home tonight.

I was looking forward to going home after work but uuuugh I forgot there was a review session for my Cell Bio class today.
I really really need to go to this one, I'm not feeling good about the test coming up.

Re: Things that piss you off
I've got to call the bank to confirm I reset my account's password which I didn't even want to change in the first place
I have to find all my cards and shit and talk to someone on the fucking phone
I'm panicking already
fuck this shit
i think i'm going to fucking cry as well
goddamn
edit: i was only on the phone for less than a minute before i had to hang up so i didn't get anything sorted
all i did was accidently reset my password i don't deserve this kind of shit
they don't even have some kind of e-mail or text service
i've only had my bank account online for like half an hour and now i can never use it again
okay
edit 2: every time i make a mistake when i'm entering my card number or something i get transferred to an advisor who's obviously going to be a human and i always panic worse than before and i hang up
i think i'm going to have to ask for my parents help on this but i really don't want to
