The shapes tend to come later, it's part of the understanding Dire is talking about. It's difference between "the outline of the head looks like this" vs "here's the circle that makes up the head's outline."
You should try practicing the shapes, though. It's always better to push yourself than to wait for a change to happen naturally.

Your run cycle is actually really solid. it's just the impact that was making it feel wonky, the foot never goes flat against the ground.
As the thigh comes down for the step, that's the cue for the lower leg to extend out. other than rotating the legs i removed 2 frames, 1 each after the foot is flat on the ground and sped it up a little.

What Ycobb said. Copying is how I began, but when you do it enough you start to figure out things like 'hey mickey mouse's head is made up of three main circles' You learn to recognise the basic shapes and how they come together. Drawing is applying the repertoire of knowledge you build up from observing other people's art and the world around you.

i never learned how to draw with the guides...i just can't do it. i try to make up for that by just paying a lot of attention to other things and skeletal structure
probably why i still suck at drawing

The upper arms are short. Triceps and deltoids appear merged.

better, but they still feel a big too short. not sure how you'd fix it without completely redrawing the arms though

Also the angles are super weird. The way to torso is angled, one arm is pointing out to the side while the other would have to be almost straight out.
There's also an issue in the hands - on one, the fingers are bent at the second row of knuckles instead of at their base.
Also this could have been deliberate, but it's weird that one hand has its palm facing down (the proper fist) and one has its palm facing his chest (the one with the knuckle issue)

Doing a self portrait after about 2 years of not doing one.

Can anyone see any grievous errors?
