Leoj made a few general news threads back in the day, but it was before most of the members who actually took an interest in general news joined this forum.

I'll be unlocking the Current Events thread now - I do think locking it helped break people out of the "no new threads" mold they were in, even if only slightly. Goal met.

She thought long and hard about what to do. Her mind drifted back to the past, back to a man she used to know. He was a traveling newsman. He'd pass through the town from time-to-time, bringing news from the other villages. Sometimes it was good.

Sometimes it wasn't.

Most never paid him much attention. But he'd bring them the news all the same. One day he left the village smiling and waving, promising he'd be back. But he wasn't a man of his word. He disappeared into the sunset.

He hadn't been back since. The village never knew what happened. Some figured it'd been bandits. Others figured he'd simply retired. It wasn't until he was gone that they realized the value of what they lost.

The village isolated itself. Even locked its cold iron gates off to the world around it. They figured it was safer this way. As she recalled the story in her mind, girl knew what she had to do.

She forced the key into the lock and turned it. Clack. The lock popped open. She took out the key, pushed open the gates. Creak. She smiled. She was ready.

It was time for another to take up the mantle of the newsman.

I went in and edited the first post of the Funny Picture thread to reflect the rules we hold within it. Any other threads you guys can think of that I should add rule sets to?

Maybe that rule should apply to any picture thread?

Reckon the YouTube thread should move to media swamp? That thread by zomvee got me wondering.

Hey proletariats, what's the rule on how many images allowed per post(i.e. LP's)? I couldn't find anything specifically stating it.

I'd say it depends which game you're LP, screenshots of, a GBA game would of course be smaller than, say, a PC game. And then also how big the pictures themselves are.
I think it's more along the line of common sense, on one page, either one huge update, two mid ones, or three small ones.

My screenshots are 256X254, so fairly small. My real question is what counts as too big? What's the cutoff point? 50 frames? 100?

That makes them less than 100kb per image so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, one post with lots of pictures will be 2mb tops. I've posted sets of 5-7 960x540 (1/4th of my screen resolution) pics in the gameplay videos and screenshots thread and haven't been notified by proletariats about them.

As of now, there's no limit. LP threads are meant for large amounts of images. Cutting down on creativity by imposing a limit is not appealing to me, either.

A good idea to keep in mind is what each thread is used for. It's inappropriate to bring up a certain level of grossness outside of the TMI thread but fine to do so in the thread. If the thread is used for pictures then it certainly isn't a problem to post large amounts in them. If you create a thread dedicated to such things, keep in mind that you'll get more views if you keep the images at a level that most people can enjoy them.

If you don't want people to talk about certain things re: the recent closure of the TMI thread you should probably clarify that in the rules instead of just locking the TMI thread and hoping for the best.

Removing the TMI thread won't stop people from getting into conversations about 'unsanitary topics' in other threads unless you make it explicitly clear that people aren't allowed to 'cyber' or talk about 'sexual fantasies' or even 'how many screwdrivers they once shoved up their butt-hole'.

If nothing else making an addendum to the rules pertaining to this issue would give the proletariats an easy 'fall-back' option if someone does start talking about that crap - all the proletariats have to do in that circumstance is say: "Stop cybering - it's against the rules."

Easy, rite?

Don't just lock a thread and hope for the best; Make it clear to the forum as to why you've locked that thread; As moderators, ask why that thread even came to exist in the first place (i.e. shortcomings in the rules) - otherwise it'll all just happen again.

Also be careful about over-moderating a forum in this regard - I mean, okay, nobody wants to see people 'cybering' about there fetishes here - I agree with that, but are you still okay with people talking about dragon dildos and whatnot? I mean, there's still sexual content there, no? Who decides what topics are/are not too offensive to discuss? When does moderator intervention cross the line in that regard?

As moderators you've gotta be realistic and accommodate the fact that people are gonna talk about stuff like that (there has been what, three TMI threads? Kinda proves there's a need for one - maybe?) - saying "There's kids on the forum." isn't really a good enough excuse for locking a thread like that - because some of the younger forumites are the worst for bringing 'unsanitary' material into that thread.

I appreciate the proletariats have a 'fun time' moderating threads like TMI, but if you're gonna lock it and say "NO MORE SOUP FOR YOU!" then be more professional about it and update the rules and stuff instead of leaving it seeming like such an arbitrary decision on the moderators' part.

I don't see anything about 'cybering' in the rules.

Hence my post.

Sure, I'll add that to rule 14 after we've discussed things between proletariats.

We thought our posts in the TMI and Health threads were enough explanations, but it is true that newcomers would not know about these explanations and changes since there is a big chance they would not read these. Adding something like this to the rules thread is better, as it will help make sure more people are aware of these things.

As for what forumites can and cannot discuss, we will add something to the rules shortly. We obviously don't want to police everything (for instance, I believe jokes about dragon dildos are fine as long as they're, you know, jokes), but there are obviously limits. I don't think that telling people not to talk about what they get off to or how they had sex is "over-moderating". The goal here is to avoid situations like what brought the locking of the last TMI thread (as well as the ones that brought the locking of the previous ones). However, I think we do want to avoid members talking about sex altogether as long as it's not about asking for advice on safe sex, relationships or health. These are fine.

I will bring that up with the other moderators and we'll get back to you all. Please be patient, and thank you for the feedback!

Think of it this way. Wry's Mum is on the forum. If you wouldn't talk about it with your friend's mum, then you probably shouldn't be talking about it in the first place.
