From everything I've gathered about grammar is that once you learn it you can play fast and loose with a lot of the tenets, so long as you stick to the basic punctuation rules like sentences and commas.

Nobodies really sure what Mary Sue means anymore. I just go by the traits that were present in the original Mary Sue, and one of those traits was having (or obtaining) mastery or knowledge of something without actually having to put forth the effort. In which case don't you need to have the context...
