If the inventory of shops wasn't random I would. Or stuff that bypasses shields completely like weapons that use missiles.

I used the engi ship. I didn't have any missile weapons and only had a Anti-ship drone Mk. 2, a Heavy Ion and some laser that fires 3 times. Was good for everything before that part but not enough to get through level 4 shields.

Just got to the last boss in FTL for the first time ever. I didn't have the right equipment to do damage to it. I had barely enough to get through the shields but not much more.

It depends on the function.

If you just have a regular polynomal function à la

f(x)= x²+4x+5
It's pretty easy. You take every part of the sum, lower the exponent by 1 and multiply it by the old exponent. If there's no x in it, it just becomes 0.

x² -> 2x
4x -> 4
5 -> 0
