Well I would, but I'm totally anal about playing the first game first. Though BL2's story does suffer pretty heavily if you don't just kinda get through the first game. Borderlands doesn't even have a story beyond "hey look a vault that might have treasure in it" and "guns, lots and lots of guns". ...
