Alder has 3 bug types on his team, so it's possible his favorite type is bug, so I'm assuming it's a bug Alder's clothing seems rather ancient themed so it must be a pokemon from long ago ...

Well Mr.3 was only around 43 when I first entered the E4, and I think somewhere between that and 46 when I beat Dennis. So low level, combined with Hydreigon knowing surf, not really the plan for me.

Second, against Dennis, my strategy for Hydreigon was this: survive one hit, blizzard or megahorn, die, send in fodder, max revive, repeat.
