First, you click the target thing. Then L, which would normally center the camera, instead faces it towards the locked on monster.

Lock on only appears in the 3DS version, which you activate by tapping the monster portrait in the lower screen. Only for large monster fights. Controls are simple enough, just look at the manual. When I fought him, the strategy was to lure him to the graveyard, then zerg rush.
