He mostly was interested in world-building, maybe because he wanted to not only create fictional languages, but have an acceptable explanation about how those languages came to be. The Hobbit is a much lighter read than LOTR, because it is more character-driven and actually aimed at a younger audie...

I thought it was going to be a time zone thing, where the implosion happens within each time zone as 0 hour occurs.

Luckily, if it's any sort of spider bite that can fuck you over, it'd hurt like hell as soon as you get it. So even if it is a spider bite, as long as it didn't hurt like hell when you got it (I'm assuming you just discovered it there all of a sudden), you're fine.
